(2022)The content we see is increasingly determined by ever more advanced recommender systems, and popular social media platform TikTok represents the forefront of this development (See Chapter 1). There has been much speculation about the workings of these recommender systems, but precious little systematic, controlled study (See Chapter 2). To improve our understanding of these systems, I developed sock puppet bots that consume content on TikTok as a normal user would (See Chapter 3). This allowed me to run controlled experiments to see how the TikTok recommender system would respond to sock puppets exhibiting different behaviors and preferences in a Finnish context, and how this would differ from the results obtained by earlier investigations (See Chapter 4). This research was done as part of a journalistic investigation in collaboration with Long Play. I found that TikTok appears to have adjusted their recommender system to personalize content seen by users to a much lesser degree, likely in response to a previous investigation by the WSJ. However, I came to the conclusion that, while sock puppet audits can be useful, they are not a sufficiently scalable solution to algorithm governance, and other types of audits with more internal access are needed (See Chapter 5).

Tämänkaltaisella staattisella ja negatiivisella representaatiolla on konkreettisia vaikutuksia transihmisten elämään, ja tätä vastustaakseen monet transihmiset pyrkivätkin muuttamaan tätä hegemonista representaatiota omilla sosiaalisen median alustoillaan. Näkyvyyttä hyödynnetään myös tapana tuoda esiin erilaisia yhteiskunnallisia epäkohtia, joita transihmiset arkipäivässään kokevat. Teoreettinen viitekehys rakentuu Hannah Pitkinin sekä Anne Phillipsin representaatioteorioihin. Tutkielman aineisto koostuu neljästä haastattelusta sekä netnografisesta havainnoinnista. Haastatteluaineisto on kerätty hyödyntämällä photo elicitation -menetelmää, jossa haastattelut viriävät osallistujien valitsemista TikTok videoista. Aineiston analyysi on tehty hyödyntämällä sisällönanalyysiä. Aineiston analyysi jakaantuu kolmeen osaan. Näkyvillä oleminen mahdollistaa transihmisten tulevan representoiduiksi omilla ehdoillaan. Näkyvillä oleminen myös mahdollistaa julkisen tilan, jossa transihmiset voivat tuoda esiin heitä koskettavia yhteiskunnallisia epäkohtia. Näiden epäkohtien esiintuominen yhdistettynä sosiaalisen median teknologiaan ja suoraan toimintaan voi parhaimmillaan mahdollistaa näihin epäkohtiin vaikuttamisen jopa yhteiskunnallisella tasolla.

(2022)This thesis examines the social interaction and media ideologies of Finnish TikTok users and how they are different from the discourses about TikTok in Finnish news media. My aim is to understand how TikTok is seen as a social media platform and what kind of social interaction and face-work users do when encountered with differing views of their media ideologies. I use Gershon’s framework of media ideologies to understand the implied and explicit opinions of Finnish TikTok users of the proper ways of using the medium and to compare those views to Finnish news media’s representations of the app and its use. By analysing discourses of the online news of Finnish Public Broadcasting Company (YLE) and the online news of Finland’s biggest newspaper Helsingin Sanomat (HS), I identify main categories of discourse about TikTok and its use. To understand the users’ perspective, I have conducted online ethnography in TikTok with two separate user accounts to collect data from videos, comments and video replies. From this data, I identify multiple media ideologies voiced out among the users of TikTok. Lastly, I compare these two data sets to see where they overlap and where they live separate lives. In order to understand the social phenomena related to the debates over different media ideologies, I utilise Erving Goffman’s concept of face and face-work. By exploring these questions with these methods and theoretical frameworks I wish to contribute to the discussion of how young users might adopt new ways of interacting and expressing themselves within a new medium, and how that might be different from the views of the people outside that medium. The goal of my thesis is to create an analytical overview on social interaction and media ideologies in TikTok, especially among Finnish TikTokers and how that differs from the discourses represented in Finnish news media

(2022)This MA-thesis explores the phenomenon of questioning language choice on TikTok’s FIN/ENG multilingual content. Traditionally monolingualism has been viewed as the standard and while attitudes towards multilingualism have become much more accepting and appreciative, the negative stigma attached to e.g., code-switching can still today result in surprisingly strong reactions towards the mixing of languages. Yet, as a result of globalization and the increasingly central role information technology plays in modern-day communication, features of multilingual speech have become somewhat common in every-day interactions. While studies dedicated to investigating the various aspects of multilingualism already exist in the field of computer mediated communication, the ‘in flux’ nature and constant development of new social media platforms creates demand for further examination of the subject. The content catering, algorithm driven, social media platform of TikTok has gained considerable global popularity in the recent years, yet little to no research on its linguistic content exists. Thus, this thesis seeks to begin addressing this research gap by answering the following research questions: (1) What kind of comments are used in questioning language choice on TikTok’s multilingual content? (2) What kind of…(A) categorizable patterns emerge from comments that question language choice on TikTok’s multilingual content? (B) impoliteness features are used in comments that question language choice on TikTok’s multilingual content? (3) Can the act of questioning language choice be considered as negatively marked online behavior? To explore these questions, the data for this study—TikTok comments that exhibit the function of questioning language choice in response to FIN/ENG code-switching—were manually gathered from TikTok by using the platform internal search function and by engaging with all content associated with FIN/ENG multilingual speech. This resulted in 75 comments which were subsequentially anonymized and transcribed. Qualitative close analysis was carefully performed on the transcribed comments in search for emergent patterns and features across the data. Additionally, the data was also combed for instances of face threatening acts (Brown and Levinson 1987) and impoliteness strategies (Culpeper 1996) and compared to the key elements found in negatively marked online behavior. The findings of this study indicate that comments questioning language choice on TikTok’s multilingual content are above all multifunctional. Patterns of emergent features reveal that the comments are often delivered through acts that are face threatening and deploy a variety of impoliteness strategies that either limit the multilinguals’ independence or meet them with rejection, thus qualifying as negatively marked online behavior. Reoccurring themes in the data tap into identity and revolve around evoking shame, addressing nation(ality), claiming discomfort, pejorative use of ‘finglish’, questioning functionality, and inviting other users to observe the multilinguals’ language use in response to their code-switching. Though these findings are not directly generalizable to all online questioning of language choice, they do provide a comprehensive dissection of the act of questioning language choice in response to FIN/ENG multilingual speech exhibited on the little studied platform of TikTok. This thesis proposes that more research into the platform specific intricacies of TikTok is necessary, especially to understand the impact of its algorithmic agency in community grouping, identity construction, and mediating of online communication.
