(2018)Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan koulutuksen ylisukupolvisuutta, eli periytyvyyttä. Koulutusta pidetään merkittävimpänä tekijänä sosioekonomisen aseman määrittymisessä. Suomessa isän koulutuksen yhteyttä lapsen koulutukseen on tutkittu ja todettu, että isän koulutus ennustaa lapsen koulutusuraa. Äidin koulutuksen yhteyttä lapsen koulutukseen Suomessa on kuitenkin tutkittu vain vähän. Naisten kouluttautuminen on Suomessa ollut merkittävää jo vuosikymmeniä, joten äidin koulutuksen yhteyttä lasten kouluttautumiseen on tarpeen tarkastella kokonaiskuvan saamiseksi. Tutkielmassa selvitetään erityisesti äidin koulutuksen ja lapsen koulutuksen välistä yhteyttä. Tutkimus tehdään sukupuolittain, tarkastellen kouluttautumisen kahta nivelvaihetta, siirtymistä peruskoulusta toiselle asteelle ja toiselta asteelta korkeakouluun. Tutkimuksen kohteena ovat Suomessa asuvat 30 vuotta täyttäneet, vuosina 1979–1982 syntyneet aikuiset, heidän suoritetut tutkinnot sekä heidän vanhempiensa koulutusaste. Tutkimuksen aineistona käytettiin Tilastokeskuksen keräämä työssäkäyntitilaston Elinolot ja kuolinsyyt -rekisteriaineistoa (EKSY8707), joka on 11 prosentin otos Suomen väestöstä. Tutkimusjoukoksi poimittiin vuosina 1979–1982 syntyneet, joiden tiedot on päivitetty vuosittain vuoteen 2012.

(2020)Tavoitteet. Nostan esille muutamia aiempia tutkimuksia, kuten Leevi Launosen väitöskirjan.

(2019)The main purpose of this research was aim to find out What the experts of education export think that what is situation now in the sector of education export. There is not a lot of research about this subject so that was also the reason why I chose it. Monika Schatz has written her doctoral dissertation about “Education export as Finland’s hottest export”. In that research she says that Finland hasn’t succeed in education export because we don’t really have the product to sell. Also, Schatz thinks that there is such a big interest for our educational system because of PISA-results. The second reason for this research was the act of government. They set the goal to increase the value of Education Export. The hypothesis was that the experts think that there is a huge potential in exporting Education but there are many challenges we need to solve out before the success. The study was a qualitative one. I decided to interview six experts of education export. After interviewing I transcribed the interviews. Two of my interviewees were working in the companies, two of them were principles of schools and two of them were working in the other positions in the public sector. They all had some special information of the field of education export. The data collection method was semi-structured theme interview. I shared my analysis for four section: 1. What kind of services the experts of education think that the education export includes? 2. What kind of marketing tools the experts of education think that the education exporters are using in exporting education? 3. What is the secret behind the popularity of Finnish education? And 4. what problems we have faced in education export? The results were that the experts think that we are selling education because of the high PISA-results. The other reasons for the interest were the quality of education and the good results. The experts also thought that we have a huge potential in sector of education export. They told that the websites, the marketing events, hints from the ministry of Foreign Affairs and recommendations from the old customers are the ways to find new customers. They told the places to market education are websites, marketing events and social media. They told that the reasons behind why we haven’t succeeded yet so much are wide. According the interviews - there have been many challenges in education export. Few of the biggest ones have been probably lack of co-operation and product of Finnish education export. Part of the experts thought that it’s not possible to export education as it is – there always need to do some changes

Tutkimus toteutettiin kuvailevana kirjallisuuskatsauksena.

(2018)This thesis is a part of Development through Sports discussion, particularly from gender perspective and its effort to improve women’s position and status in developing countries by using sport as a tool. The study aims to depict the position and effects produced by gender in the field of sport and education by the means of ethnography. The perspective of the study is holistic in its attempt to acknowledge the impact of Tanzanian society, economy and politics for girls’ and women’s position within sport and education. The study was carried out with 7-week long fieldwork in a Tanzanian teacher training college. The college was a boarding school and the study focused mainly on students of physical education. The data of the study was collected with participant observation, informal discussions, semistructured thematic interviews and structured survey questionnaire. Also study material used in the college was collected, such as course outlines and directions given to the students. The interviews were analysed with thematic analyse. The space of girls and women in the masculine field of sport in Tanzania is narrow and challenging. For sociocultural reasons, it is difficult for women to obtain the motorical and psychosocial skills needed in teaching physical education in childhood and youth. It is more difficult for girls and women to have access and to move in masculine spaces that in addition to sport and sporting fields, is salaried work done outside home. Salaried work is necessary for financing the studies, but acquiring the money has moral effects. The morally acceptable financiers of women’s education are families – fathers and husbands mainly. Moral conflicts are caused if a woman acquires the funding through transactional sex and/or uneducated, physical labour. By moving in these masculine, independent spaces of sport and money, the morality and value of a woman can be questioned and thus inhibit the development of women’s position in society and women’s financial independence.

(2013)This study assesses the relationship between education and HIV-status, and the contribution of HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, and sexual behavior to this association among 15-24 year old population in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe bears a generalized, sexually transmitting epidemic with a declining HIV prevalence currently estimated at 15 percent. In earlier studies in sub-Saharan Africa, the relationship between education and HIV has been found to change during the epidemic. In mature epidemics, when the knowledge on the transmission mechanisms of the virus increases, education is suggested to become protective of the infection. In addition to increased HIV-related knowledge, more accepting attitudes towards people living with HIV and cognitive skills facilitated by education are argued to influence the behavior protecting from the infection. The aims of this study were two-fold: 1) to describe the trends in the level of HIV-related knowledge, attitudes and sexual behavior by the level of education, and 2) to assess the relationship between education and HIV-status based on the most recent data. This study focused on 15-24 years old only, among whom the acquired infections were assumed to be recent. The trend analyses were based on four cross-sectional, nationally representative Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey data sets collected between 1994 and 2010-11. In addition, the association between education and HIV-status was examined by calculating logistic regression models using the 2010-11 data, in which HIV-test results linked with the survey data were available. When trends between 1994 and 2011 were observed, both among women and men the level of education, HIV-related knowledge, and being tested for HIV had become more common, except among men with lower levels of education, who had worse HIV-related knowledge in the end of the periods studied. In 2010 more women in all educational groups, and men with lower levels of education, were married and had started their sex life, when men with higher levels of education, had postponed the onset of their sexual activity compared to 1994. Regardless of the level of education, both men and women had fewer lifetime partners and had less high-risk sex in 2010, though this was considerably more rare among women compared to men. In all other groups condom use in high-risk sex became more frequent during the periods studied, except among women with lower levels of education, who during the final study period were using condoms less often in high-risk sex than during the first study period. When the association between education and HIV status and the contribution of the intervening factors was assessed using the 2010 data, a statistically significant relationship between education and HIV status was found in women but not in men. Among women who had ever had sex having incomprehensive knowledge on HIV also increased the risk of the infection. Both in men and women having risky sexual behavior increased the risk of the infection. In line with earlier studies, the findings of this paper suggest that among young people in Zimbabwe, positive changes in HIV-related knowledge, and changes in high-risk behavior have occurred, though these changes vary according to the level of education and gender. More educated women seem to postpone the onset of their sexual activity, but those who have started their sex life have more often casual partnerships. Women with lower educational level marry and start their sex life early, but have very rarely casual partnerships, though condom use in these partnerships is lower and has even decreases, contrary to all other groups. Men with lower levels of education had most often incomprehensive knowledge on HIV, and had changed their behavior less compared to more educated men. More educated men had been able to alter their behavior more, but having many lifetime partners was still most common in this group. The findings of this study suggest that specific prevention measures are required to address these trends and the needs of different educational groups in both women and men.

(2017)Self-rated health (SRH) is a frequently used survey indicator of general health. It is periodically utilised in the study of educational health disparities. Several researchers have, however, suggested that systematic population sub group differences in health self-ratings (reporting heterogeneity) may results in SRH reflecting a different health status, or aspects of health, for different educational groups. Previous studies imply that the associations between SRH and other indicators of health may be strengthened by higher education. However, the studies disagree on the strength and the scope of the interaction effect. Comparability is also an issue due to, for example, the variation in the selected health indicators by which SRH is assessed. No such studies have so far been conducted in Norther Europe. The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to address educational SRH reporting heterogeneity. Using quantitative methods, this thesis analyses which aspects of health are included in dichotomised poor or very poor SRH ratings, and whether education moderates the relationship between SRH and the indicators of health. The selected health indicators represent five health dimensions identified in previous studies: clinical health, functional health, health behaviours, mental health and bodily symptoms and experiences. The analyses are conducted using logistic regression and regression –based nonlinear decomposition methods. The study utilises the Health 2000 data (n= 5586) for the household and institution dwelling population over the age of 30 residing in mainland Finland. The data is nationally representative and consists of a clinical- and mental health examination, and survey sections. Overall, a high volume of somatic complaints was found strongly associated with poor self-rated health for all educational groups. Other significant contributors were functional health, diagnosed mental health conditions, and to some extent diagnosed diseases. An educational interaction effect was found for cardiovascular disease, subjective functional limitations in everyday tasks, and high volume of somatic complaints. In all cases education strengthened the association. However, for the majority of the indicators, SRH was associated with, no interaction effect was found. Compared to those respondents with a higher education, those with lower educational attainments more often reported poor SRH, but the selected health indicators and demographic variables explained virtually the whole difference. The study then, to some extent, concurs with earlier findings of higher education strengthening some of the associating between poor SRH and other indicators of health. However, the effect was statistically significant only when comparing basic education to higher educational attainments, and it was less systematic than some of the previous studies have suggested.

(2022)This thesis is a contribution to the discussion on globalising education. Empirically, it focuses on the context of Finland and particularly, on Finnish actors engaging in education projects in the Global South. Today, every child’s right to education is widely acknowledged, and the aim of all children receiving formal education is a global goal that rarely is contested. Between 2001 and 2011 access to education improved with 20%. However, the fast improvement of access has had its consequences, and today 60% of all children that go to school do not reach the required numeracy and literacy skills. This has come to be called ‘the learning crisis’ both in educational sciences and in the field of global development. This thesis highlights two pitfalls related to solving the learning crisis, namely that of Westernising the world and that of enhancing an unsustainable relationship with nature. The idea of a learning crisis presupposes that all children should learn universalised and standardised skills, and consequently this thesis asks whether this actually is the best outcome. Currently, the content of schooling remains distant to many children as it rarely is locally created, but rather globally or at best nationally. The same applies to language, as the medium of instruction often is a former colonial language rather than the learner’s mother tongue or heritage language. More specifically, this thesis examines how Finnish actors engage in global education projects, and the aim of this work is to obtain an overview of where Finnish education development actors stand in relation to solving the global learning crisis. The research questions centre around the participants’ inclusion of locals in their work, their knowledge about the local context, and their perception of their role. Semi-structured interviews with 15 education experts engaging in education development projects in the Global South were carried out in January 2021. The critical theoretical frameworks of post-development and decolonial theories guide the discourse analysis of the collected data. Together, the main findings in this research demonstrate how current ways of globalising education still relay almost without exception on Western epistemology while other epistemologies are neglected. The results suggest that the most common way to ameliorate the quality of schooling, is by arranging teacher trainings for local teachers, while neither the content of schooling nor the language of instruction is in focus. In order to contribute to solving the learning crisis, this study suggests that practitioners in the field of education development in the Global South should increasingly engage in projects in which the main focus is the learner’s mother tongue and the content of schooling, as well as engage more in lobbying on the state level in order to encourage inclusive education policy.

(2018)The purpose of this study is to exam factors affecting dual careers, especially factors relating to educational side of it. Dual career means combining education and sports career simultaneously. Sports career at the higher levels and education have traditionally been seen exclusive to each other in Finland. Even tough sports career is relatively short and on the other hand education is often key for many important fields in our society. Aim of this study is to find out, which factors relating to education, influence development of dual careers. The study has been done by qualitative method. The data is collected from interviews, done for three persons working with dual careers. Interviews are made by using basis of half structured and theme interviews. After that, data is analyzed with content analysis as a method. In this study, content analysis is data based. From the interviews, factors affecting dual careers appears very broadly. Meanings in collected data were very diverse and connected to each other. Key findings concerns extent of the matter and quantity of affecting factors. From the data four main categories were made. Those categories were named social factors, individual factors, sports system factors and factors associating school’s motivation. Considering the development of education in dual careers, the factors outside of school are meaningful. On the other hand, schools can also benefit from athlete students

(2015)Aims. The purpose of this study is to explore, interpret and describe Ghanaian home economics education. The data for the study were collected during my university exchange in Ghana in the spring 2014. The theoretical background focuses on learning and teaching and cultural relatedness in those two phenomena. It also sets Ghana in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa with the focus on Ghanaian education. This study describes the contents and the implementations of home economics education through a cultural perspective. Methods. The data were collected using three different methods. It consists of interviews of three local home economics teachers and a learning assignment for 22 pupils which was implemented in a home economics class. Also, the data were produced by observing home economics classes in two different junior high schools for six weeks. The data were analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results and conclusions. According to the study, home economics appeared as a subject that increases well-being. From the teachers' point of view home economics has far-reaching impacts for pupils' futures. The teachers had an urge to make pupils learn. The role of a teacher was significant in the classes and the interaction between pupils and teacher quite one-sided. The inadequate resources for teaching made it difficult to teach with diverse teaching methods. The results of the learning assignment reflected the contents and the implementations of home economics education. The answers were many-sided but less creative. Culture was strongly present in everything. The study does not qualify for broad generalizations about Ghanaian home economics education. However, culture and its impacts on teaching and learning are important to take into consideration in every educational context.

(2023)I study the conflict between the state and the social movement in Oaxaca, Mexico since 2006. The recent phase is the resistance to the national educational reform. My research question is: what are the main issues to advance and views of the Indigenous teachers and citizens on the grassroot level in the Oaxacan social movement and in its conflict with the Mexican state? My method is an Indigenous collaborative method, which is holistic and relational and includes dialogue. My research results consist of three thematic findings. I conducted semi-structured collaborative ethnographic interviews in 2013 and 2016 with fourteen people, 8 men and 6 women, 9 of whom were teachers, all from one of the following Indigenous cultures: Zapotec, Mazatec, Mixe, Afro Mexican and Mixtec. Within the Indigenous discourse emphasis is on the non-fragmented, holistic nature, the metaphysical and pragmatic, language, place, values, and relationships. Indigenous pedagogies are intergenerational, relational and land based. Schools should offer differentiated educational plans in the bioregions and should care for the interdependence between language, culture, and territory, and consider multispecies thinking. The first thematic finding was that the Oaxacan teachers have the special knowledge needed: concerning environmental issues, Indigenous epistemology, pedagogies, and learning systems, all in the Sección 22 proposed land-based PTEO -educational reform plan. The second important theme was the cultural changes in Oaxaca connected to the Guelaguetza Popular making it an Indigenous celebration and the Indigenous women’s empowerment in the context of taking over the Canal 9 TV station. The third finding is that the teachers and other actors in the social movement have a strong social commitment, which is the optimal goal for a teacher to have. But there cannot be reciprocal cooperation if the governments of Oaxaca and Mexico do not start respecting the national and international law, especially concerning the human rights.

(2016)In this research I study Bachelor’s of Arts (Education) and Bachelor’s of Social Services own conceptions of their professional core competences and the relation between academically acquired skills and the work standards. The purpose of this study is to find out what are the things the early childhood educators see as their professional core competence in relation to their work in day-care centre and does the education provide the early childhood educators sufficient competence for their daily work. The material for this research was collected by using a survey form that consisted of 37 arguments and two open questions. In the end, 37 forms were returned, 19 of which were answered by Bachelors of Arts (Education) and 18 by Bachelors of Social Services. According to the results of this research, the core competence of Bachelors of Arts (Education) and Bachelors of Social Services is really similar to one another. The open questions about the competence for the daily work brought up instead more differences between the answers. The Bachelors of Arts (Education) had a wish for more special pedagogy education and practical experience for their training programme. The Bachelors of Social Sciences whished instead for pure early childhood education for their training programme.

Tutkielma jakautuu kahteen osaan.

Yhdistämällä eri aikoina perustettavia maalaiskuntia rajoiltaan vakaiksi yksiköiksi saadaan väestö- ja koulutietoja yli 400 yksiköstä, joista 286 on mukana yhteensä neljä vuosikymmentä kattavassa analyysissa.
