(2022)Aim of the study. In Finland, the number of multilingual children referred to speech and language therapy assessment is relatively higher than monolingual children. However, distinguishing abnormal linguistic development from typical multilingual development is not straightforward due to the lack of multilingual tests and speech therapists. This study aimed to provide information on the morphosyntactic structures of the expressions of typically developing and language- impaired children aged 4–5 years who speak Arabic as their mother tongue and the deviations that occur in them. The aim was also to assess whether the morphosyntactic deviations produced show a transfer effect of Arabic language. The study is significant from the point of view of differential diagnosis. The qualitative information produced makes it possible to reduce the over- and underdiagnosis of developmental language disorder in native Arabic-speaking children who successively acquire Finnish language. Methods. The study examined 18 children aged 4–5 who speak Arabic as their mother tongue and who successively acquire Finnish language from the broader material of the Multilingua-project. Six of the children were suspected of having developmental language disorder. The study material consisted of recorded assessment situations that were transcribed to evaluate the morphosyntactic structures produced. Three different semi-structured play situations and The Cat Story picture sequencing narrative task were included in the analysis for each subject. The morphosyntactic forms and structures produced by the subjects were analyzed using the FIN-LARSP method. In addition, the morphosyntactic deviations in the expressions and the transfer effect of Arabic language were examined from a qualitative point of view. Results and conclusions. There was great variation in the inflectional repertoires of typically developing and language-impaired children. However, the inflectional repertoires of typically developing children proved to be broader than those of language-impaired children in terms of nouns and verbs. The groups differed in the use of adessive case, the accuracy of verb inflection, the regularity of morphosyntactic deviations, and the use of atypical wordings. In addition, expressions of typically developing subjects appeared to have a more versatile effect of Arabic language transfer compared to language-impaired children. The results help Finnish-speaking speech therapists detect morphosyntactic features that may be signs of a language disorder in Arabic-speaking children acquiring Finnish language.

(2019)Aims. This study examines the expressions of 4–5 year old bilingual (Russian-Finnish) children with and without developmental language disorder and the aim is to examine, how the morphosyntactic repertoires of these children differ from each other, what type of morphosyntactic changes are observable in these expressions and is it possible to track traces that illustrate the effect of crosslinguistic transfer of Russian language on the morphosyntax of Finnish language. Examining the language development of bilingual children with and without developmental language disorder is important, because more information about the linguistic features that indicate developmental language disorder is needed. This study is one of the first studies in Finland that examines the morphosyntax in the Finnish-language expressions of bilingual children, whose first language is a minority language. This study is part of the PAULA-project, which examines the effects of a small group intervention targeted to children with refugee and foreign backgrounds. Methods. The material of this study consists of video footage from the PAULA-project’s language assessment situations. The children’s skills were assessed with the Finnish Test of Phonology, the Reynell Developmental Language Scales (test of receptive speech) and The Cat Story 3 picture sequencing narrative task and in three short play situations. The expressions of four typically developing bilingual 4–5-year-old children and three 4-year-olds with developmental language disorder were transcribed from the video footage. The language samples were analyzed with the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn). Verb and noun inflection were also examined with qualitative methods. Results and conclusions. The morphosyntactic repertoires of case markers in the typically developing children’s nominal phrases turned out to be more extensive than the repertoire of the children with developmental language disorder. Use of adverbials in verb phrases indicated that the typically developing children were able to produce more complex phrases than children with developmental language disorder. In this study, the morphosyntactic features that seem to indicate developmental language disorder in the Finnish-language expressions were inappropriate use of case markers or the complete lack of case markers in noun phrases, frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, and ungrammatical word formation. Effects of crosslinguistic transfer were identified in the use of negatition, past tense and code-switching.

(2021)Tavoitteet. Muun muassa kehityksellisessä kielihäiriössä ilmenevien morfosyntaktisten vaikeuksien kuntoutuksesta on jo olemassa jonkin verran tutkimusta, mutta autismikirjon lasten morfosyntaktisten taitojen kuntoutukseen liittyvä tutkimus on vähäisempää. Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena oli kuvata, millaista kuntoutusta puhuvien autismikirjon lasten morfosyntaktisten taitojen kehittämiseen keskittyvässä tutkimuksessa on käytetty ja millaisia tuloksia kuntoutuksella on saavutettu. Menetelmät. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin integroivaa kirjallisuuskatsausta. Tutkimusaineisto haettiin Scopus- ja PubMed-tietokannoista hakulausekkeella (synta* OR morphosynta* OR gramma*) AND (autis* OR ASD OR asperger) AND (therap* OR treat* OR interven*) AND (children OR adolescent*). Aineistoksi valikoitui viisi vuosina 2010–2020 julkaistua tutkimusartikkelia.

(2014)Aims. Cochlear implant is a device that provides a sense of sound by electric stimulation of the inner ear hair cells and the auditory nerve. This technology enables the acquisition of spoken language to children who are severely hard of hearing, however, there exists a wide range of variation in language outcomes. Language skills can also develop unevenly in different language subdomains. In most cases, the morphosyntactic sub-skills have been shown a delayed development. This can be due to the perceptual problems that continue to be present despite the cochlear implant, because the cochlear implant does not provide normal hearing. Cued Speech allows access to the complete phonological representations of speech and may then improve the learning of morphosyntactic regularities. The aim of this study is to analyze morphosyntactic skills in Finnish children with cochlear implants in cross-sectional setting and discuss the benefits of Cued Speech in the development of these skills. In addition, parents' experiences and attitudes towards Cued Speech are also surveyed. Methods. Four children with severe hearing loss fitted with cochlear implants and exposed to Cued Speech participated. A video material (30 min) was recorded for the study using semi-structured play setting, where the child interacted with his/her parent. The material was analyzed by using the Finnish version of the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn), through which the grammatical complexity of spontaneous speech can be assessed. Results were compared with the development of morphosyntax of normally hearing children and with the IPSyn scores of normally hearing children presented in literature. During data collection details of the use of Cued Speech was surveyed from the parent by a paper questionnaire. Results and conclusions. The morphosyntactic abilities of the children using cochlear implants were mainly at the comparative level as that hearing age mates. These results may be explained by the use of Cued Speech but also by many other factors that were not excluded in this study. Nonetheless, the good morphosyntactic abilities of the children along with parent satisfaction with the use of Cued Speech support clinical decision making when different rehabilitation choices to children with hearing impairment are considered.

The processing of inflected spoken words in mono- and bilinguals : an event-related potential study (2021)Kaksikielisyyden yhdentymishypoteesi (engl. convergence hypothesis) esittää, että kehittyvän kielitaidon myötä ensimmäisen ja toisen kielen käsittelyyn käytetään jaettuja aivoalueita. On avoin kysymys, miten kaksikieliset käsittelevät sanatason kieliopillista eli morfosyntaktista tietoa yksikielisiin verrattuna. Sama vaikutus esiintyi myöhäisessä vasteessa kielitaustasta riippumatta.

(2018)The written skills of Finnish become essential for the secondary school students studying Finnish as a second language and literature (F2). Even though they learn the oral skills of Finnish primarily by communicating with their Finnish-speaking coevals, they will need the written skills after finishing secondary school when proceeding with their studies. When teaching the written skills of Finnish, it is important to focus on the relevant issues to enable the language skills to develop in the desired way. In this study I examine the verbs used in the stories of F2-students. I am also aiming to illustrate the changes of the verbs between the various levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). By examining these changes, I can investigate what kind of verbs indicate into better written skills of Finnish. I examine the verbs in two aspects: semantically and morphosyntactically. This study was conducted as a qualitative research, utilizing the principles of linguistic text anal-ysis. As my research material I used Cefling-corpus, which included stories of secondary school F2-students. The stories are placed in CEFR rating in the levels A1–B2. From these 114 stories I gathered 1814 verbs in total. I categorized them semantically by the classification created by Anneli Pajunen (2001). This classification consists of primary-A-verbs, that describe concrete states of affairs, primary-B-verbs, that represent more abstract conditions, and secondary-verbs that evaluate and proportion the relation between the primary-verbs. In addition, I categorized the verbs morphosyntactically i.e. by their grammatical mood, tense and person mood. I also in-vestigated the use of verb phrases and the negative verb. According to this study, the usage of the verbs seems to have a strong connection with the lan-guage skills of the student. However, the remarkable factor in the evaluation of the writing skills was not only the semantic class of the verb, since the shares of primary-A-, primary-B- and sec-ondary-verbs in different CEFR levels did not change linearly. More value was given to the use of the verb in different situations. Especially on the lower levels of CEFR, the students stuck to the simple verbs that were familiar to them, instead of using verbs specific to the situation. These verbs were typically used clumsily to indicate something that would have been more natural to express with a more specific or complex verb. Based on the material the more complex and spe-cific verbs or the abstract and diverse use of the verbs did indicate for higher writing skills and more fluent text. Teaching the verbs and their derivations as a bunch could be an effective way to expand the vocabulary and written expression skills of the student. Regarding the morphosyn-tax, the quantity of verb phrases, negative verb and the usage of the grammatical mood of the verbs did not seem to have a clear connection with the CEFR levels. However, it seems that alt-hough the students evaluated to levels B1–B2 write more accurately than the pupils on levels A1–A2, they also observe the conventions of the text type of a story more firmly. This can be seen as a high usage of imperfect and a coherent way of referencing. Perhaps utilizing the genre skills more while teaching the verbs would result in learning that would be based on the real-life situations of using the language.
