(2019)The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters of elk hunting traits in Jämthunds. There were nineteen traits under consideration. Heritabilities, repeatabilities, and genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated for the traits. Also, coefficient of inbreeding and genetic trends were estimated. The data consisted of results from official elk hunting trials collected by Suomen Harmaahirvikoirajärjestö ry in 2012-2016. There were 46 221 results, from which 23 335 of Jämthunds. The pedigree data was provided by The Finnish Kennel Club and it included 31 544 Jämthunds. Significance of the fixed effects was estimated using F-test in analysis of variance with RStudio 1.0.136. The pedigree was pruned with RelaX2 1.54-pedigree analysis programme. Variance components were estimated with DMU-package using AI-REML-approach. The estimated heritabilities were low and varied between 0.00 and 0.047. The highest heritability was obtained for search and the lowest for obedience during work. Genetic correlations varied from -0.25 to 0.98, and the strongest were estimated for most of the bark related traits. The genetic trend has been positive in all traits, except for obedience traits. The coefficient of inbreeding for dogs born in 2016 was approximately 7.03 %, and the coefficient of inbreeding has decreased 0.26 % in the last decade. There are multiple non-genetic factors that affect the traits, and the data is based on subjectively evaluated variables. It is possible to improve genetic evaluation by collecting more information on trial conditions, by using the whole scale of points during the evaluation, and by making more objective evaluations of the traits. The estimated breeding values of the important traits can be used in selection of the parent of the next generation.

(2015)Hovawart is an old German working dog breed. Few hundred dogs are registered annually in Finland. Hovawarts can be seen in working trials as well as a family pet. In Hovawart breeding program (JTO) hypothyroidism is mentioned as a one of the most common hereditary diseases and is usually caused by lymphocytic thyroiditis. Lymphocytic thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease which destroys the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism is treated medically by substituting natural hormone production with medical hormones. The aim of this study was to estimate the heritability of the hypothyroidism in Finnish Hovawart population. Research material was provided by Finnish Kennel Club and Finnish Hovawart Club. Dogs born between 1990 and 2010 were included in the study. The influence of gendre, birth year and month, size of the birth litter, breeders living area, colour and inbreeding were studied. Data was delimited in two different ways. Data 1 consisted 4953 dogs, where 107 were hypothyroid and 4846 were assumed to be healthy. In data 2, hypothyroid dogs were the same as in data 1 but only dogs used for breeding were considered as healthy (739 dogs). The χ2 test was used to evaluate the influence of individual factors. The influence of fixed effects and covariate were tested with a generalized linear model. Fixed effects were chosen by using the backward method and the applicable model was chosen by using e.g. Akaike’s information criterion, AIC. The animal model and the REML method was used in variance component analyses. Since hypothyroidism is a binary factor logit and probit models were used. For comparison, heritability was also estimated with a linear model. In data 1 colour and birth litter size were significant. In data 2 colour, birth litter size and gender were significant. Estimated heritability by logit model was 0.65 in data1 and 0.54 in data 2. When transformed to the underlying liability scale the corresponding values were 0.36 and 0.26, respectively. Heritabilities by probit model were 0.24 and 0.23 and by linear model 0.21 and 0.44 for data 1 and 2, respectively. Heritability of hypothyroidism is moderate and can be considered even as high, hence the prevalence of hypothyroidism can be decreased by breeding. However, it is not possible to exclude all hypothyroid dogs and their close relatives from breeding. Hypothyroidism can be diagnosed later when the dog has already been used for breeding. To decrease the prevalence of hypothyroidism there is a need for an appropriate tool to support breeders’ choices. Efficiency requires openness within breed and collecting and offering the data to public use.

Kaikissa ominaisuuksissa havaittiin vaihtelua, joten niihin voidaan jalostamalla vaikuttaa. Minkin nahan koolle saatiin suurin geneettisen vaihtelun vaihtelukerroin (23 %) eli valinnalla pystyttäisiin siihen vaikuttamaan eniten.

(2013)The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of minks Aleutian Disease (AD) infections and investigate the genetic relationships between Aleutian Disease infection and fertility traits. The research data was obtained from the Finnish Fur Breeders Association. The data had information from one mink farm in years 2006-2010. The data contained 27 753 one year old female minks. Only those females who had more than three kits were tested. There were 18 478 tested minks of which 9.2 % had AD. The pedigree data had 41 573 animals. In this study AD infection, pregnancy and felicity were binary traits. AD inf. 1 = sick, 2 = healthy. If female had kit(s) or aborted or lost her kit(s) after birth, pregnancy (PREG) = 2, otherwise = 1. If female lost her kits after birth, felicity (FEL) = 1. If litter size were at least one, FEL = 2. The heritability estimates and variance components (REML) were calculated using multi trait animal model and DMU-software. Heritability estimates for the studied traits were low: 0.07 for AD infection, 0.07 for PREG, 0.04 for FEL and 0.08 for litter size. The heritability estimate for AD was smaller than the common litter variance for the trait. Genetic correlations between AD inf. and FEL, and AD inf. and litter size were positive. The genetic correlations between AD inf. and FEL were 0.447 ± 0.132 and between AD inf. and litter size 0.290 ± 0.108. The results suggest that resistance for AD inf. has genetic variation. Although the heritability estimate for the trait was low, it can be affected by selection. Genetic correlations between AD inf. and fertility traits were favourable. Selection for larger litter size could increase mink resistance for AD infection.

(2010)Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää Opaskoirakoulun pentutestissä mitattavien ominaisuuksien perinnölliset tunnusluvut sekä niihin vaikuttavat tekijät. Aineisto koostui Opaskoirakoululla vuosina 1988–2008 pentutestin suorittaneista koirista (900 kpl).

(2018)Live weight data of cows is needed when preparing feeding plans and monitoring body condition of cows. Live weight is also important in medication; underestimating live weight is a major factor in the development of drug resistance. Live weight of dairy cows has increased in the years 2007–2017. The weight of primaparous cows has increased 21,4 kg (8,8 %), in the second parity 29,2 kg (9,7 %) and in the third parity 34,4 kg (10,8 %). The live weight is affected by both genetics and environment. Higher live weight leads to increased maintenance energy and feed consumption and thereby also increased emissions of greenhouse gases. For these reasons, the body weight should be lowered, or at least its increase should be slowed down. In this study, the objective was to estimate heritability of live weight and body conformation traits in Finnish Ayrshire. In addition, the possibility to include live weight into Nordic Total Merit index (NTM) using breeding values of the frame traits is assessed. From the original data outliers and incorrect observations were deleted. The data were also constrained by fixed effect subclass size. The final data contained 39,550 live weight observations and 12,928 measurements or scores conformation. The heritabilities of this study were: live weight 0,45 (standard error 0,02), stature 0,53 (0,04) and other conformation traits 0,11–0,32 (0,02–0,03). Genetic correlations between live weigh at different ages were very high 0,96–0,98 (0,01–0,03) and the phenotypic correlations were 0,43–0,76. The correlations between the live weight and body characteristics were computed only for the first calving. The genetic correlation between live weight and stature was 0,65 (0,03) and between live weight and other frame traits -0,14–0,59 (0,05–0,09). Based on the results, live weight could be predicted with frame traits. Hence it is possible to calculate the estimates of breeding values to live weight by using the composite index of body characteristics. Adding live weight index into NTM with a negative weight would restrain the growth of cow size.

(2019)The target of pork production is to produce lean meat efficiently in a sustainable way taking into account environment and ethical aspects. The most important production traits in pigs are average daily gain, feed efficiency and leanness. A lot of research is conducted related to production traits in comparison to feeding behavior traits. The objective of this study was to estimate heritability of feeding behavior traits and their genetic correlations with production traits in Finnish Landrace population. The data included feeding records of 4059 Landrace pigs measured automatically in Figen’s test station. The pigs had started their test period during 2010 - 2016. The measured traits were the number of visits per day (NVD), time spent in feeding per day (TPD), daily feed intake (DFI), time spent feeding per visit (TPV), feed intake per visit (FPV), feeding rate (FR), average daily gain (ADG), back fat thickness (BF) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Feeding behavior traits were divided into 5 periods. Heritability estimates of feeding behavior traits were moderate. The heritability estimates were 0,22-0,29 for NVD, 0,33-0,47 for TPD, 0,16-0,25 for DFI, 0,22-0,31 for TPV, 0,28-0,36 for FPV, 0,35-0,38 for FR, 0,27 for ADG, 0,22 for BF, and 0,24 for FCR. Compared to other published results heritabilities of TPD and FR were similar. However, heritabilities of other feeding behavior traits were quite low compared to published results. In addition, heritability of BF was unexpectedly low. The genetic correlations of feeding behavior traits were similar at different test periods. The highest positive genetic correlations were between traits TPV – FPV, FPV – FR, and NVD – TPD. The highest negative genetic correlations were between traits NVD – FPV, TPD – FR, and NVD – TPV. Genetic correlations between feeding behavior traits and production traits were low. Only between DFI – ADG, DFI – FCR, and FPV – FCR the genetic correlations were significant (and positive). In conclusion, heritabilities of feeding behavior traits were moderate. Because the only strong genetic correlation between feeding behavior and production traits was obtained between DFI and ADG, including feeding behavior traits in breeding programs is not necessary. However, feeding behavior data are easy to collect from the electronic feeders and the observations are reliable, thus daily feeding records can be used for monitoring animal’s health and welfare.

(2018)Since 2004 the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders' Society has offered a Canadian conformation classification system to its members via the cooperation with Ayrshire-Canada. The Canadian classification system differs from the Nordic system and has e.g. udder texture as a new trait describing udder softness and elasticity. The research objective was to estimate the genetic variation of udder texture and its correlation to production traits and somatic cell count and udder conformation traits in the Finnish Ayrshire cows. The data from the Finnish Ayrshire Breeders contained phenotypic records on the 1st lactation cows in 2011–2017. Finnish Animal Breeding Association (Faba osk) provided pedigree, herd, yield, insemination and calving information for the cows. The final data set for statistical analyses contained records on 3303 cows. The fixed effects of the traits were investigated by analysis of variance (R program lm). The variance and covariance components of the traits were analysed with Bayesian methodology resorting to the R program MCMCglmm. The heritabilities for the first lactation traits were 0,34 for milk yield, 0,26 for protein yield and 0,26 for fat yield and 0,10 for logarithmic somatic cell count (SCS). The heritability of udder conformation traits were from 0,13 for fore udder up to 0,47 for teat length. The heritability of udder texture was 0,15. The genetic correlation of udder texture with production traits were all negative: -0,36 – -0,34, and zero with SCS. The genetic correlations of udder texture with other udder conformations traits were positive with the highest being with mammary system (0,52), median suspensory (0,51) and udder depth (0,45). The data was representative and sufficiently large, as the heritabilities for production traits were similar to those found earlier and the accuracy of estimates was satisfactory. The longevity can be measured by the total number of lactations. The variation in this number was mainly explained by the milk yield and SCS of the first lactation records. Among the respective udder conformation traits, also the median suspensor and udder depth were significant. Because the udder texture is correlated with the latter ones, its contribution to the variation was not significant. Udder texture has a reasonable amount of genetic variation and is positively genetically correlated with other udder conformation traits, in particular with mammary system, median suspensory and udder depth. The use of the udder texture as an indicator trait for longevity would require a larger data volume. People who use the Finnish Ayrshire Breeder's AF-class-system should have all their cows assessed so the research and selection would have access to records covering a representative variation range.

(2018)Tiivistelmä Suomen Ayrshirekasvattajat ry on vuodesta 2004 tarjonnut jäsenilleen kanadalaiseen rakenneluokitusjärjestelmään pohjautuvaa AF-Class-luokituspalvelua.
