The main goal of this study was to find out what the sewing process of a garment is like and what the challenges of such a process are. Not much research has been done on sewing and it’s difficult to find out information about cognitive processes of the sewing process. Sewing is described as a hobby with several different meanings. It can be a way to relax or to enjoy life. In this study there is an interest in the working methods of the sewers, the impact of previous experience on work, the critical points of work and problem-solving processes, and the usability of the guide. The research method used in the study was the thinking aloud method in which subjects are asked to speak all their thoughts aloud throughout the experiment. Through the verbalization of thoughts, information is obtained about the subjects' cognitive processes and the content of the working memory. Three subjects participated in the study. In the experiment, the subjects had to make a dress that suits them according to Suuri Käsityö -lehti 8/2019. The material of the study was thinking aloud protocols, video material and dresses which subjects were made in the study. The most common challenges in the sewing process were related to controlling the use of the seamstress and knowing the concepts. All subjects used different seam solutions in their work, although they had the same instruction in their use. The basic principle in the work was that the more familiar the work phase was, the less instruction was used to support the work and the more one's own skills were applied in the work. Not only were the sewing instructions used to support the work, but also the picture attached to the instructions and the general instructions page of the magazine. It can be stated that the guide was adequate and covers all work steps to the extent necessary.

The aim of this study was to find out the motives behind sewing children`s clothes within the 1960s and 2010s and to uncover the change of the motives and the meanings of craft between the 1960s and 2010s. There have been previous studies on motivations of hobbies and craft. However, the studies do not explain the motives of sewing children`s clothes. The research data were gathered by informal interviews of two mothers sewing children`s clothes in 1960s and two mothers sewing clothes in 2010s. The interview data were analyzed by using qualitative theory bound content analysis. Theory bound analysis starts like data-driven analysis, but at the end it takes assistance from the existing theory. In this analysis I used Danish psychologist K. B. Madsen`s motivational theory. In this study the collected data was classified according to K. B. Madsen`s motivational theory into activity-orientated, social, cognitive and emotional motives. The main motives of sewing children´s clothes in 1960s were affordability and the real need for the clothes. By the turn of the 2010s the sewing had become a meaningful activity in accordance with own values, where self-realization can produce unique useful clothes for children. All interviewees found the sewing as a nice hobby for them.

Thesis narrates a dressmaker's life in a small village called Itäkylä, located in Lappajärvi municipality in the late 1940s and in the early 1950s. This study is placed in the history of craft and craft culture. It is a narrative study; the literature and empiric data discusses with each other through the entire study. The aim was to understand the studied phenomenon, in this case the dressmaker's work and to describe and interpret it in the light of her time. How much the environment in which she grew up affected the dressmaker's career choice? What was Itäkylä's craft culture like during the Second World War and after it? What kind of craft traditions the dressmaker's childhood home offered and above all, what it was like to be a dressmaker in the 1940s and 1950s in a small rural village community? The perspective of this study is in micro-history and craft culture that surrounded the dressmaker. The study is a narrative and the empiric data consists of interviews with 83 years old informant. The aim was to collect her stories, and the transcribed data consists of sixty pages. The interview data was processed in a narrative way; a new story, the dressmaker's biography was created on the basis of it. The analysis is a data-oriented narrative content analysis. The data were divided in eight different themes, which reflected the study's chronology. During the dressmaker's childhood and youth, crafts were present in everyday life and they were associated with positive memories and encouragement. In the stories she told, the post-war countryside is coloured as a world that was dominated by women. Itäkylä was known for its linen fields. Crafts were villagers' daily life and an important economic activity. The dressmaker's work in the late 40s and early 50s seems to have been a busy but rewarding occupation, where the most stress was caused by the shortage of fabrics and materials. Due to the period of shortage, the dressmaker's ingenuity was under severe strain. She has, however, experienced herself as a self-confident seamstress. Patterns were not used in making clothes, which was typical in rural areas. The informant's home environment and surrounding craft culture seem to have been a good seedbed on her way to become a dressmaker.

Tiivistelmä - Referat – Abstract The purpose of this study is to find out the motives behind active sewing hobbyists in order to show the essentials of the sewing as consumption and as a hobby. The informants are members of a Facebook based online sewing community, Saumanvara. They were asked of the motivational factors involving their sewing hobby and also questions about their sewing history. There has been previous research on craft and motivation, but in this study the focus is within a sewing community. A social media based online community offers an interesting view on the subject. Presumably, participating the online community and being an active member is a meaningful part of the hobby. In this descriptive study sewing as a hobby was approached with the following question: Which were the motivational factors for hobbyist sewers in the Facebook sewing community? The quantitative data was collected by using a web survey in January 2016.The collected data (N = 352) was classified according to K.B. Madsen’s motivational theory into activity- orientated motivation, cognitive motivation and into social and emotional motivation. Activity-orientated motivation was the most important motivational factor. Sewing was viewed as meaningful use of leisure time. Also the joy of making things and chance for self -fulfillment were seen important. Sewing appeared as a pleasant hobby, as a good opportunity for learning new skills and a functional way for getting new clothes. Among motives classified as social and emotional the pleasure of self-made item, reverence of well-made clothes as well as sense of self-competence were seen important motivators for sewing hobby. Finally, I conclude that the most essential reasons maintaining sewing as a hobby are: the value produced by the product itself and joy as well as self-developmental benefit of sewing. My forthcoming master’s thesis offers a possible place for a strict analysis of the motivational background variables.

Kandidaatin tutkielmani käsittelee blogin käyttöä osana ompeluharrastusta. Tutkimuskysymyksikseni muotoutuivat seuraavat: (i) mitä ompelublogin ylläpitäminen on ja (ii) miten ompelublogi on osa käsityöharrastusta. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty teemahaastattelun keinoin. Haastatteluaineistosta nousi esiin kaksi monin tavoin vastakohtaista bloggaajatyyppiä.

The aim of this study is to examine homemade dog clothes. Dressing dogs according to the prevailing weather conditions is important care as much as proper feeding and exercise. Not all dogs need to be dressed thanks to their fur. Therefore, this study focuses on short-haired sighthounds and their clothing. The research questions were “why sighthound owners sew clothes for their dogs themselves” and “what are typical stories related to self-sewn sighthound clothing”. The theory was supported by studies of handmade human clothing, as dog clothing is a very little studied subject. Previous studies have addressed the impact of dog clothing usability as well as the identity of dog owners on dog clothing choices. This study focuses on handmade dog clothes. The study collected dog clothing stories from three sighthound owners who sew clothes for their dogs themselves. These dog owners all have a long experience of sighthounds and they all take their dogs to sighthound racing competitions. Dog owners were allowed to tell the stories of their self-sewn dog clothes freely without any restrictions on what to say. These stories were transcribed and recurring themes were gathered from them with analysis of narratives. Based on these classifications, two narrative stories were created using narrative analysis. These stories represent two approaches to sewing, which are process-centered sewing and product-centered sewing. The results showed that sighthound owners sew their dog’s clothes because there are no well-fitting clothes available in store. Self-sewn dog’s clothes are just the right size which allows the best protection for the muscles of dogs. Handmade dog clothes are meaningful which increases their emotional value. It is possible to save money when you sew your own dog clothes. In addition, sewing can provide mental and social well-being. Results also show that sewing dog clothes can lead to craft as a hobby, or craft hobby can combine with dog hobby
