The purpose of this research was to find out about the experiences of young adults hobbies and the importance of hobbies in the life course. Theoretical starting point in this research is life course, as well as concepts of normality, norms and values. I also focus on the Finnish sports clubs and the various positive and negative phenomenas that are observed among different sports. The research question is "How do the experiences of hobbies take place in the speech of young adults?" The research gave interesting results, especially about the significance of hobbies and the phenomenon of hobbies. In the results of the research, the internal rules and hierarchies of sports hobbies, which no one seems to question, became even greater. This research could be used in the future to spread awareness of disadvantages in sports clubs and teams.

Finnish children’s ability and eagerness to read has lately decreased. Technology is partly a reason for this decrease. Due to this problem, a need to maintain the conversation regarding the importance of reading was risen and a willingness to show by example how fictional literacy could be utilized in schools. The purpose of this study was to research how the constructivist learning theory appears in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s stone. The first book of the Harry Potter series was chosen to be analyzed because it is one of the most popular books in the world. Constructivist learning theory has a strong status in Finland and that is why it was decided to be set as the point of view in this study. It was recognized that the book might include another learning theory’s views on learning which is why also these findings tried to be highlighted. This study was a qualitative study and it used theory oriented content analysis as a research method. Theoretical framework was formed after the research planning. The study material was analyzed four times. The material which was analyzed contains 335 pages. Two main categories, learner and teaching, were generated after the analyzing rounds. These two categories consist from constructivist learning theory’s different concepts. The appearance of these chosen concepts were analyzed. According to the results, Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s stone manifested constructivist learning theory’s views on learning, learners and teachers. Especially they were highlighted in the learner category’s concepts. Those concepts which were under teaching category weren’t in accordance with constructivist learning theory. All in all the analyzed book seemed to speak on behalf of constructivist learning theory and it seemed to criticize other learning theories. In addition, this study showed how fictional literacy can be analyzed through scientific literacy and how fictional literacy can enrich our thinking. This is why the usage of fictional literacy beside school books should be seriously considered.

Aims. The expansion of higher education in the late 20th century has brought about changes in many traditional academic structures. For example, the traditional regional recruitment base of the student nations of Helsinki University broke down and their membership was made voluntary in 1969. During the next decades the number of new members in student nations declined rapidly despite the rise in overall student enrolment. The aim of this study is to investigate the changing role of the student nations through the changing regional and social basis of their new members from the 1970s to 1990s. For the subject of this study was chosen Hämäläis-Osakunta student nation, where the change was most rapid. This study aims to approach structural changes in education from the viewpoint of educational sociology by inspecting the representation of different social groups in the membership of the nation through the means of participation ratio to filter the changes of simultaneous changes in educational and societal structure. Methods. The study uses data from the membership register of Hämäläis-Osakunta. A permission to use the data was obtained from the nation. No identifiable personal data were collected. The data was picked from new member entries from the period 1969-1999 with ten-year intervals. The regional background of the members was operationalised by the place of the matriculation exam and the social background by the occupational status of the father, which was classified according to the census classification rules of Statistics Finland. Participation ratios were calculated with employed males ages 45–54 as base population. These were compared to new students of both at Helsinki University and countrywide as well as new members of Savo nation. Findings and conclusions. The social background of new Hämäläis-Osakunta members was observed to follow the general development of new students both at Helsinki University and countrywide. Exceptional growth of the nation's membership was mainly due to increase in members from Uusimaa region, while the traditional recruitment area of Häme declined until the 1990s. At the same time, the proportion of descendants of upper level employees (especially with higher education degrees) grew, although the overrepresentation of these groups was somewhat mitigated by the general rise of social status. From a regional viewpoint, a clear division could be observed: the role of upper level employees was accentuated in Uusimaa, while in Häme and the rest of Finland the social breakdown was more even. The representation of agricultural workforce increased slightly, while that of lower level employees decreased; workers remained largely underrepresented. The findings support the conclusion that traditional academic institutions, like student nations, retain their appeal most persistently among the more educated classes, who can best recognize their cultural capital.

In my thesis I study the mechanism of discrimination from the perspective of the transactional model by Arnold Sameroff. In this thesis I see transaction as ongoing process, in which at least two components interact changing each other. I am interested in transactions, which happen whwn the relationship is hierarchichal. For example when someone representing the main population is interacting with someone who belongs to a discriminated minority. My thesis exposes this phenomena from the view and experiences of two persons representing discriminated minorities in Finland and my aim is to wake up discussion about the invisible power that the priviledged main population uses in the relation with minorities. The study was conducted by using a qualitative, phenomenographical, but also social constructivist approach as I studied the transactional processes occurring in social relationships. The research data was collected by two non structured interviews and three observation situations. The data was analysed by using the method of narrative analysis. I analysed the experiences of two persons with different minority backgrounds. One of them was a finnish roma and the other a finnish ghanaian. I found different kind of transactions, which occurred as different kind of inner representations or social information processing when facing someone representing the main population. All the transactions showed growing segregation between the main population and the minorities.

The purpose of this thesis is to find out how kindergarten teachers experience music education in kindergarten. The main topics are how kindergarten teachers interpret the environment of music, if they find any challenges working with music and their thoughts about music’s impact on children’s development. The research method is the qualitative interview. The research is inspired of the hermeneutic approach. Three kindergarten teachers were interviewed. The results show that kindergarten teacher’s personal view on and interest in music impacts the shape of the musical activities in kindergarten. The kindergarten teachers experience some obstacles in music education, for an example they think they need more knowledge about music. The results also show that the music environment could be improved in kindergarten. It turned out that the possibilities of music education in kindergarten matters, especially for the children’s language development.

Children’s literature offers the possibility to address, in an accessible way, questions that are relevant to children. With the help of children´s literature, adults can discuss both complex and everyday themes with children. Furthermore, the contents of children’s stories may have an effect on how children see their environment and themselves. A report made in 2017 by the Swedish Institute for Children’s Books, shows that disability is a new, noticeable topic in Swedish children’s books published in 2016. Overall, inclusion seems to be a current trend in children’s literature. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to look at different ways, in which physically impaired bodies are portrayed in contemporary children’s picture books, and what these might suggest about definitions and meanings concerning disability. The study has been conducted using a qualitative content analysis. Six picture books written since 2010 have been analysed, with theories about children’s literature and disability as a basis. The study shows different roles and identities given to the characters with disability, in the picture books that were chosen. The results of the study show narratives with comparing judgments of impaired and “able” bodies, but also narratives that depict the characters with disability as much more than just their impairment.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate what kind of an environment kindergarten is for highly sensitive children. By investigating what kind of challenges and opportunities highly sensitive children faces in kindergarten, and how pedagogues can support highly sensitive children, can improvements and opportunities be brought up. The research questions are: What does it mean to be a highly sensitive child? What kind of challenges and opportunities does highly sensitive children face in kindergarten? How can pedagogues support highly sensitive children in kindergarten? The research is a qualitative study with a phenomenographic method approach. The research material was gathered through half-structured interviews in where three pedagogues who work in kindergarten and preschools have been interviewed. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The results show that highly sensitive children are understood as different and that highly sensitivity comes out in different ways. Highly sensitive children do face various challenges and opportunities in kindergarten, that are mainly related to different kind of resources. The competence and sensitivity of pedagogues understands to be important or the most important thing for the wellbeing of highly sensitive children in kindergarten. The size of the group, environment and activities can either create challenges or opportunities for highly sensitive children, depending how they are adapted to the needs of highly sensitive children. Pedagogues who understands, do see the individual needs of highly sensitive children and can adapt the activities and the physical environment to these needs, understands create opportunities and support highly sensitive children in kindergarten.

I’m interested in the positive effects that reading aloud offers for children and the teacher’s role in it. Along with new technology new forms of the traditional read alouds has emerged. In this study I will treat the concept digital tools within focus on reading aloud and it will be based on the Finnish preschool curriculum. The aim of this study is to investigate the importance of reading aloud for young children in preschool. This is a qualitative study that highlights thoughts and experiences about read alouds. I’ve used relevant literature and interviewed three preschool teachers with a position as a kindergarten teacher at preschools in Finland. The interviews have been conducted through an electronical questionnaire. The result is based on the literature and on the interviews and how these support each other. The result shows that reading aloud has a positive effect on the child’s development and why it is important to include it in the preschool activities. The preschool teachers tell that they use digital tools such as audiobooks but prefer traditional read alouds to enhance the feeling of togetherness. The teachers agree that the aim of read alouds is to support children’s language skills but also mention other areas of development through read alouds.

Read-aloud is a daily activity both in daycare and preschool. It is used for various purposes such as to gather children and introduce them to new topics, although it’s mainly associated with the rest time. Several studies point out the positive effects of read-alouds, among others expanding children’s language skills and encouraging their literacy development. The purpose of my study is to introduce the children’s thoughts and experiences of a read-aloud activity in preschool. My study is a qualitative work and is mainly focused on personal interviews with children. I interviewed eight preschool children in two groups. The main focus of the interviews were the children’s thoughts and opinions about the books preschools use, and the read-aloud experiences in general. The result shows that read-alouds mostly have a positive impact on children. Most of them think of it as a part of the rest time, but also, they consider it a learning opportunity. It’s important to note the role of the books in read-aloud times. The chosen book itself determines whether or not the read-aloud is a fun or a boring experience for the children. The book’s content and language playes an important role in understanding it, and it determines if the children will find it difficult or easy to listen to when it’s read to them.

The purpose of this study is to exam factors affecting dual careers, especially factors relating to educational side of it. Dual career means combining education and sports career simultaneously. Sports career at the higher levels and education have traditionally been seen exclusive to each other in Finland. Even tough sports career is relatively short and on the other hand education is often key for many important fields in our society. Aim of this study is to find out, which factors relating to education, influence development of dual careers. The study has been done by qualitative method. The data is collected from interviews, done for three persons working with dual careers. Interviews are made by using basis of half structured and theme interviews. After that, data is analyzed with content analysis as a method. In this study, content analysis is data based. From the interviews, factors affecting dual careers appears very broadly. Meanings in collected data were very diverse and connected to each other. Key findings concerns extent of the matter and quantity of affecting factors. From the data four main categories were made. Those categories were named social factors, individual factors, sports system factors and factors associating school’s motivation. Considering the development of education in dual careers, the factors outside of school are meaningful. On the other hand, schools can also benefit from athlete students

The aim of this study is to get an insight in which roles occur in children’s free play. How are these roles displayed, and how does children negotiate these roles? This study process how children interact in situations of free play. The main concepts that are discussed in the theoretical part are roles, role negotiation, play, and roleplay. The concepts are explained more profoundly in the theoretical part, which also establishes the theoretical basis of this study. This study is completed as a qualitative study with both case study and observational study as methods. As data collecting method I have been using video observation. The material for my study was collected in a Swedish speaking preschool in southern Finland. The video observations were made during two mornings in this preschool. The aim was to capture free play amongst children. Five preschoolers in total participated in the study. The results of this study indicates that role negotiations as a phenomenon is something that is not that commonly occurring in children’s free play. All of the children participated in choosing roles, but they mostly just announced which role they wanted themselves, without any further negotiation. The roles that occurred in these plays were quite ordinary and mostly permanent. No one chose a role that automatically would have indicated strong leadership, which means that all of the children were somewhat equal in status. The children also had thoughts about what characteristics their own role should have and how the other role characters should act. This could be explained as how the roles were displayed. In my study I found two main categories in how children expressed their own roles and their expectations of the other role characters. These main categories were verbally, and through action.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze a selection of five children’s books from a gender perspective. In this study, a qualitative analysis method was used to analyze the selection of five children's books read in kindergartens and preschools in Porvoo. A qualitative analysis method was used for this purpose, to analyze five children’s books having been read in kindergartens and preschools in Porvoo. The research questions used are as follows: How are the different genders represented in the books? How do characters of opposite gender interact with one another in the books? In what ways do these interactions affect the roles of the characters in the books? The subjects of research were chosen through a questionnaire sent out to 9 kindergartens and preschools in Porvoo, in which pedagogues were asked to write down the title of at least 5 books they have read in their kindergarten or preschool class during the past year. The analysis was carried out with the help of preconceived notions about which characteristics and activities are stereotypical to which gender. These were compared to the characteristics and activities shown in the five books. The data from these analyses was compiled with the help of the following questions: Who are the characters? What are their relationship to one other? What do the characters look like? What are they wearing? What activities do they perform? The results show that each of the 5 books held many gender-stereotypes, with very few breaches of the gender barrier. The characters had gender-stereotypical looks, as well as interests, behaviors and actions that were typical for their sex. The results also show that the interactions between characters do not affect the roles of said characters in the book, but that there is, however, a recognizable pattern seen, in which male characters are often pitted against female characters, and vice versa.

Lasten puhevaikeuksien yleistyessä tarvitaan tarkoituksenmukaisia keinoja, joilla jo päiväkodeissa pystytään tunnistamaan apua tarvitsevat lapset ja aloittamaan puheen kehityksen tukeminen. Kieli on tärkeä osa ns. sosiaalista kompetenssia, joka on laajasti arvostettu kyky tämän päivän yhteiskunnassa. On tärkeätä tunnistaa puheen vaikeudet ennen kuin lapsi aloittaa koulun, koska kielelliset valmiudet ovat erittäin merkittävä asia lapsen tulevalle oppimiskyvylle ja viestintätaidoille. Päiväkoti on ympäristö, jossa lasten puheen häiriöt on mahdollista tunnistaa ajoissa.

The aim with this study is to recognize how children communicate and interact during free play and in what different ways children’s play start. In this study qualitative methods are used to gather information. I am also interested in finding reasons in conflicts in children’s free play. In this study video observation was used to gather information about children’s interaction in their free play. Participatory observation was also used and an observation diary was written. The video recordings gave the most important analyzable material. The participants in this study were from a bilingual kindergarten and every so often the same children participated in the free play where I recorded. The children’s play was not directed in any way, because free play was recommended for this study. The play situations were recorded and afterwards transcribed into text, which was analysed. The key findings in this study was that children communicate with adult-like sentences and speak to each other using a multifaceted narrative conversation style. Usually children’s play start with choosing toys or tools for the free play. The second common way to start free play was an experience from children’s everyday life and the third common way to start a play was choosing roles for a role play. Conclusions of this study were that children strongly connect their experiences in their free play and children use their imagination in their themes for free play in kindergarten.

The aim of this study is to examine parents' thoughts about their children's hobbies. Intention is to investigate factors that parents think are essential in hobbies. I reflect parents' upbringing perspective with social climate that highlights individuality, efficiency and competitiveness in the spirit of neo-liberal policy. My interest is directed to the potential benefits that parents believe hobbies produce. The capitalistic values of neo-liberal politic seems to have background influence in school and in leisure and I seek to examine indication of these values in parents speech. Previous studies suggest that hobbies serve as one form of cultural and social capital when choosing educational paths. Skills obtained at school alone don’t seem to suffice for the aptitude tests to selective classes, but with suitable hobbies one can acquire necessary capital to pass the tests. The ideal of healthy citizen and wholesome activity has also been sought through hobbies. With proper hobbies there is also the parental desire that their child finds suitable friends. Organized activity has even been considered as a vaccine for social exclusion and behavioural problems, especially during puberty. The study material consists of four interviews. The interviewees were parents of preschoolers in a day care center in the capital regionof Finland. Interviews were conducted as theme interviews and they were transcribed and analysed according to the principles of content analysis. Based on this research, hobbies were thought to bring content and interests into children's lives which would help them find their ”own thing”. Hobby-specific know-how, sport skills and better self-esteem were mentioned as benefits of hobbies too. The most significant advantages were thought to be the health benefits, the development of communication skills and the prevention of social exclusion. Health education was underlined by several interviewees and these parents believed that organized physical activity and sports lifestyle passes into adulthood. There was not significant evidence of neo-liberal policies in parents' speech.

This Bachelor’s Thesis covers the IDyOM (Information Dynamics of Music) model, which models the prediction of melody, and is based on statistical learning of melodic regularities. In addition the model is contrasted with the earlier Implication-Realization theory (IR theory) of the prediction of melody. The IR-theory hypothesizes that the prediction of melody is composed of innate bottom-up rules and learned top-down style. First some music theoretical concepts and theories and models of prediction are discussed. Melody is an essential part of music at least in Western culture. Melody can be defined as a sequence of tones. The prediction of melody can be studied with formal models, in this case a cognitive model. Predictive cognitive processes allow an organism or artificial intelligence to make a model of its future state and direct its behaviour accordingly. This Thesis also presents the background theories of statistical learning and information theory. The IDyOM model simulates statistical learning which means finding and learning regularities from input, by using unsupervised learning, in which correct answers are not taught to the model. The model is based on Shannon’s information theory which postulates regularities of discrete sources and stochastic processes. The IDyOM model is multidimensional in two ways: it combines the dimensions of the input, e.g. pitch, into new dimensions, e.g. intervals, and uses two inputs to compare a new melody to a broader corpus. The performance of the IDyOM model is compared to behavioral studies with human subjects and the IR theory. The IDyOM model explains human prediction of melody at least as well as a computational implementation of the IR theory. Statistical learning may be a mechanism for learning melodies.

The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to examine what expectations immigrant parents have from the Finnish kindergarten and what they think of multiculturalism, multilingualism and upbringing. The theoretical part is divided in six sections where the following concepts are analyzed: multiculturalism, acculturation, multilingualism, minority language and identity, multilingualism and upbringing, communication. This is a qualitative study and three people were interviewed. The criteria for the interviewed persons was that they are of foreign origin and that they talk another language than Finnish or Swedish with their children. The informants have Russian as their mother tongue; this does not mean though that they all are from Russia; they all come from different countries. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed in relation to the research questions. The results demonstrate that the central values that emerge in relation to the child's upbringing are health, safety, hygiene, responsibility, respect, rules and athletics. Parents are aware of the importance of language, both at the kindergarten and at home, but preserve their mother tongue that is Russian. The study shows that the culture in the kindergarten and home are relatively similar and that they must support each other. Kindergarten is considered a place where parents learn the structure of the society's culture. The results also indicate that parents want information about their child's everyday life, something that is appreciated and leads to a good relationship with the kindergarten.

The point of interest to this thesis is university studies and the impact they have on future employ- ment and societal status. Previous research has shown, that the meaning of education has changed in relation to employment. Nowadays, to be competitive in search of an employment one must educate oneself continuously. In this thesis I analyse the meanings given by university students to their stud- ies and the societal impact they have. I analyse my topic with the concepts of neoliberalism, cognitive capitalism and human capital. I consider neoliberalism as a zeitgeist that affects societal and personal activity. Knowledge and skills (human capital) are being collected for personal benefit. This could be described as a new form of capitalism, otherwise called cognitive capitalism. Four university students have been interviewed for this research. Discourse analysis has been used to examine the material from semi-structured interviews. University studies formed to bare great meaning, but didn’t guarantee an employment. Along with studies, students made all sorts of other activities, with which to prove to be an active citizen. This was often done to the detriment of one’s own wellbeing. It could also be read from the material, that the possibility for the collection of skills and knowledge was not equal in society. Education appeared to have an influence on inequality.

Aims. Earlier research has shown that recruiters tend to often use an intuitive and subjective approach in employee selection. Research also show that rational and objective tests are the best method for successful recruitment, and that an intuitive approach in employee selection is not sustainable. The aim of this study is to answer the question if intuition is a legitimate tool for employee selection. Methods. As a method, I chose to use a limited systematic literature review together with a thematic method of analysis. The search for articles was done in the databases Helka and Google Scholar, with the help of search terms such as recruitment, employee selection and intuition. Manual search was also done by searching through the reference lists of the articles. Results and conclusions. The result of the study does not give a clear answer to the question if intuition is a legitimate tool for employee selection. Research done within recruitment suggest that intuition should be avoided as much as possible during employee selection, while research done within general organizational context suggest that intuition is a valuable supporting tool for decision making.
