In organizations it is more and more common to understand that time is not the only resource employees possess. The concept of psychological capital is intended to describe those people’s psychological resources that positively affect the quality of work. Psychological capital depicts people’s ability to appraise situations positively and succeed in goals based on confidence, motivation and failure tolerance. It can be developed intentionally and it is a measurable concept. It consists of four dimensions: hope, optimism, resilience and self-efficacy. Psychological capital has an effect, among other things, on work performance and well-being. So far, there is only preliminary evidence that psychological capital can be developed with short intervention trainings. However, the scope of the interventions so far have been narrow. Research on the development of psychological capital is very limited and more research is needed. This review states that by understanding the antecedents of psychological capital more comprehensive and effective interventions can be developed. In addition, the shortcomings of the research and suggestions for future studies are highlighted.
