Objectives The objective of my study is to find out what kind of books class teachers are using and how they consider the role of books in teaching. Reading skills may vary amongst pupils in primary school teaching. These variances are showing not only in reading skills but in the interest towards literature and reading in general. The discovery of reading and supporting it are important topics in the primary teaching curriculum and enhancing it is important starting from the first grade. In school, pupils are motivated to reading. One of the motivating methods is to use a school desk book which is a common according to my own experiences. Methods Six school teachers were interviewed for the study. Interviewees were picked randomly from three schools in Vantaa. Study material was collected as individual interviews. It was transcripted word by word and examined using a substance analysis. Results and conclusions The interviewed teachers told that they are using reading books in their teaching. ABC book was mentioned as the most common book but each of the teachers also mentioned to be using a school desk books. The sense of community was mentioned as important in using ABC books. School desk books served the interests of each pupil and they were often used as extra assignment. Some of the teachers held reading classes.
