Aims. The aim of this qualitative study was to examine how elementary schools physical education curriculum has changed between years 2004 and 2014. This study examined what differences and what similarities there are between these two curriculums. Especially it was examined the changes in primary educations physical education curriculums. Methods. The study method was qualitative theory bound text content analysis. Data of the research consist of the texts of the curriculums and physical education based theory. Results and conclusions. The results show that physical education curriculum had changed, based on task, aim, content and evaluation. Basic motor skills had stayed as the core of physical education and in primary education perceptual-motor skills had been separated. POPS 2014 was more extensive and diverse than its predecessor. Self-determination theory had also clearly affected to the new curriculum. One of the major differences between the curriculums was the status of wellbeing and concepts of sports. Mental wellbeing has a much bigger status in the POPS 2014 than in the POPS 2004. This is especially shown in the psychical and the social performances have risen to level of the physical performance. From sports, only swimming is still mentioned in the POPS 2014. Sports should only exist in a playful environment and condition factors should no longer affect evaluation. In the future it would be interesting to examine how the changes in the curriculum have affected teachers in jobs. It would also be interesting to examine what are changes in the higher primary classes.
