This thesis deals with the question as to how comics can function as an informal learning tool for children learning to read. The theoretical framework of the thesis consists of the concept of informal learning, and the self-determination theory by Edward L. Dec and Richard M. Ryan. The self-determination theory studies the variation between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and its impact on learning. Informal learning occurs away from a classroom or school environment, often in a situation that is not intended for learning or teaching. Nevertheless, informal learning situations can be effective, motivational and positive. Informal learning often occurs around phenomena of popular culture. They provide a learning environment that is more innovative than formal education. Doing something enjoyable and interesting like reading comics can be so rewarding that one is ready to work for it. Intrinsic motivation comes from within, and it is considered a prerequisite for learning and development. The thesis also deals with the theory of learning to read and research about comics. The thesis is a literature review about informal learning, the self-determination theory, the theory of learning to read and the theory of comics studies. The central result of the thesis is that according to the literature comics can be a way of enhancing learning to read, especially if they are written in proper Finnish and have a rich vocabulary. To affirm this result, empirical studies should be conducted.
