This study examined the assignments of early education that emerged from the opinion pieces of Helsingin Sanomat. The topic is current due to the renew of the early childhood education law. The basis of early learning plan (varhaiskasvatussuunnitelman perusteet, 2016) and some principal work have been used as a theoretical basis. The study was carried out by using qualitative content analysis methods. The research material used was the opinion pieces in Helsingin Sanomat in the period of 01/2017–05/2017. The material consisted of 11 articles that were limited to the basis of the term and titles. The material was analysed by means of theoretical content analysis, after which the results were analysed by theory. The assignments of early education that occurred in the opinion piece column were directly related to the assignments set out in the basis of the early learning plan (varhaiskasvatussuunnitelman perusteet, 2016). The assignments of early education were seen in Helsingin Sanomat opinion pieces as teaching, raising, nursing and early education as a social service. The results of this study empha-sised in particular the enabling teaching by increasing staff training and increasing resources among other things.
