There is a growing need to develop second language education in Finland. Second language learning is still a minor research area in Finland, and it needs more research especially in using literature vocabulary development. The aim of this document is to find ways to use literature in second language learning. Rich vocabulary is essential for being part of peer group and for academic growth. Reading and discussing about books are in a big role in developing a vocabulary. Finnish National Curriculum states that there must be literature in second language education. In this study I’m looking for factors that are beneficial to vocabulary growth in second language learners. This study covers six articles which research vocabulary development through book readings in preschool aged second language learners. Results show that diverse use of books will develop second language learner’s vocabulary. Also using child’s first language as a support for learning second language predicted wider vocabulary growth.
