The purpose of this study was to examine the values of sport club instructors in school-based sports. Values of teachers in physical education and values in sports clubs have been researched, but school-based sports organized by sport clubs falls between them. According to LIITU research, 27 percent of pupils participate in sport clubs in schools and 23 percent participate in other school-based sports outside of physical education. One of the goals of physical education is value education, which leaves a great responsibility to the instructors. The theoretical background of this research is Shalom Schwartz’s Theory of Basic Values: ten universal motivational values. The valuation and setting of this study is based on Ilmanen, Jaakkola and Matilanen’s (2010) study of values of Finnish physical education. The data consists of responses from 130 sports club instructors, who responded to an online survey in Spring 2017. Participants were asked to name three of the most important values of school-based sport and answers were grouped into eleven distinctive value classes. The association between values and background variables was measured using cross tabulation and the χ2 test. The most important values of instructors in school-based sport were pro-sociality, enjoyment of sport, physically active way of life and stimulation. There were no statistical association between values and education, work experience in the educational sector or in the sport sector. Neither was there association between values and gender. There was a statistical significance between values and age: equality was especially important amongst under 30-year-olds and stimulation amongst 30–45-year-olds. According to this research instructors of school-based sport have similar values as teachers in previous studies. Instructors emphasized educational values and positive experiences, which in line with the core values of Finnish comprehensive schools set by Finnish National Agency for Education: a supportive growing environment and consideration for others.
