    To interact with others in society, emotional intelligence is required. Emotional intelligence consists of skills that can be learned, but not all parents have the skills or interest to support their child's emotional development; this is when school plays important role. This thesis discusses emotional intelligence and emotion regulation, one crucial element in emotional intelligence. The research questions are 1) What is emotional intelligence? 2) How does emotion regulation develop? 3) How can the teacher support the student’s emotion regulation development? The purpose of this study was to research literature and recent studies on the teacher's possibilities to support the development of the student's emotion regulation. The research was based on theories, scientific articles and previous studies about emotional skills. The articles were found in Finnish and international databases, such as ARTO, ERIC and Google Scholar. In this study a synthesis was created based on previous studies. Emotional intelligence consists of awareness of your own feelings, emotion management and regulation, interpersonal skills and empathy and motivation. These areas include different emotional skills, such as the skill of perceive another’s feeling. Based on research, aspects that influenced emotion regulation development were nervous system, temperament and level of development, parental and environmental support and the emotional education of the school and teachers. The results confirm that the teacher can help the development of student’s emotion regulation by observing his own emotional skills, making the class atmosphere safe and using different interventions. In order to do that, the teacher needs emotional skills.
