    Aim. Research has proven that school engagement is important for students’ learning and managing at school. Engagement can be seen as a complex process in music education. It’s important to observe students’ engagement with music education and also music education’s opportunities to enable lifelong engagement in music. In this thesis I will study how engagement in music education has been researched internationally. Methodology. I executed this thesis as a combination of integrated and systematic literary review. Theory chapters has been made as an integrated literary review. Systematic literary review has been made using those theory chapters. For the systematic analysis I collected literature from two scholarly databases. Most important criteria were that articles are about engagement and music education and articles has been released after 2015. I chose five peer reviewed articles from different countries as the literature for my systematic analysis. I studied those articles’ ways to research engagement and how engagement has been defined. I compared those definitions of engagement with my theory chapters’ definitions. Results and conclusion. From the articles there were found five various ways to define engagement. As a conclusion it seems that especially music education which is based on students’ productive activities increases engagement with music education. However in some of the articles engagement weren’t defined thoroughly. Lifelong engagement was measured simply asking does adult participate in musical activities and why are those activities part of person’s life. There were found that lifelong engagement with music can be a result of childhood experiences in music.
