The point of interest of this thesis is an online career counselling service, currently being developed by the Kohtaamo project. I approach career counselling and the questions of employment and education through the concepts of postmodern and information society. According to Peavy (2000) the idea of one lifelong career in the postmodern society is old fashioned. One must take in consideration how technology transforms modern labour while planning one’s career. However, transition to the information society doesn’t only shape the economy or labour but also the structures of the welfare state (Castells & Himanen 2002). In my thesis I examined the discourses about online career counselling services and the youth using them. In my thesis I interviewed three members of the group planning the online services and used discourse analysis to examine the material from the semi-structured interviews. The subject of my thesis is the online career counselling services. They are co-ordinated by the Kohtaamo Project, a joint project of Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. I identified three discourses when talked about the online career counselling services: discourse of similarity, discourse of the individual’s advantage and discourse of the multi-channel counselling. The discourse analysis shows what kind of ways are used to reduce the prejudices towards the digitalisation of the services provided by the welfare state. It is relevant how the traditional and digital services could be integrated in a way that it benefits the customer.
