In my bachelor thesis, I wanted to research experiences of participants of Käden taidot courses at Vantaa Adult Education Institute of Tikkurila. I chosed Adult Education Institute of Tikkurila as research target, because it is one of the biggest adult institute in Finland. I wanted to find out following themes: what kind of different motives people had to take part in different kind of Käden taidot courses and what kind of preconceptions they had toward these courses. I also wanted to find out how these preconceptions came true. Inquiry method I used, was survey, because with it, it is easy to handle big sampling and it is easy to answer anonymously. Inquiry method I used was based on Likert scale multiple choice questions and open questions. In the inquiry form every multiple choice was followed by open question where the participants could define the answer they gave. I took 60 forms to the Adult Education Institute and I ged back 24, so the answering percentage was 40. The classification of my inquiry based on qualitative and narrative analysis. Based on the answers I get, I divited participants to three different groups; “the Repeater”, “the Hang arounder” and “the Knower”. The repeater wats to revise a course again, because it is possible to learn something new. The Hang arounder takes part to a course, because the reference group is so good, even if she/he wants to learn something new. To the Knower it is most important to learn something new, when the social aspect has a minor role. Named groups went one on the other and it was difficult to make accurate categorizations. All the respondents agreed that all preconceptions towar courses came true and they were educational. In addition to they served social needs.

The aim of this thesis is to outline the strengths of craftivism as a means of activism and political participation. The investigative function consisted of describing, analyzing and interpreting themes that had emerged from the podcast Poliittisia pistoja. My intention was not to formulate widely applicable hypotheses of the phenomenon , but to gain diverse information on the subject and to understand craftivism as a current phenomenon. The thesis is a qualitative case study, where a conversation on craftivism published as an internet podcast functions as the source material. The utilized analytical method belongs to the sphere of content analysis, where the source material is analyzed and transcribed largely based on the source material. Six main themes emerged from the source material: 1) the facilitation of political agency, 2) consolation, empowerment and regulation of feelings, 3) diversity, 4) visual impact and volume, 5) performativity and emotional argumentation, 6) doing things the other way. The result of this study is a narratively intact text body, where craft is examined from the perspective of self-expression, activism and political participation. By studying craft as a channel for expressing opinions and participating in societal affairs, it was revealed that the strengths of craftivism as a means of activism were related to, among other things, the accessibility, diversity and visuality of craftivism and how craftivism enables the creation of new subject positions and political spaces. According to the source material it was also possible to vent feelings and thoughts of political grievances into the compositional and material craft process. Craftivism leading to functional products and processes, such as intimate and political cross-stiching or performative protest, is connected to historical, cultural and sosioeconomical meanings, which are addressed in this thesis.

The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of drama education regarding the bold self-expression of the pre-school aged child. Children will go to school the following year, so in pre-school it is valuable to invest on encouraging children in their self-expression skills as the ex-pression skills are highly valued in both the school and the working world. Basis for the study is that various skills, such as self-expression, can be learned. The research task was refined by three research questions exploring the factors that are required to build-up bold self-expression, how drama education can impact on the development of the chil-dren’s self-expression skills, and how being encouraged appears on the individual and the small group level. The theoretical framework of the study contains two main concepts: self-esteem and drama education. Self- esteem is covered from temperament and encouraging perspective. Drama education includes self-expression, emotional education ja social skills. Previous studies have fo-cused mainly on strengthening child’s self-esteem. There is only a small amount of research on be-ing encouraged in self-expression skills from child’s point of view. This study is qualitative in nature and selected approach to the theme was action research which was carried out through three drama sessions to the group of children. Four children were selected to this small group in collaboration with the group’s kindergarten teachers. Common goal for all the children was to get encouraged in their emotional expression and especially to two of them needed additionally encouragement in self-expression in general. Children’s needs and the themes that had risen in previous sessions were taken noted in the planning. The data was collected by using a re-search journal, video observation and children’s interview through “stimulated recall” method. Ma-terial was studied through video analysis, which displayed how many times children did express themselves linguistically, physically and emotionally. In addition, it was analyzed, how many con-tact initiatives children took towards friends, researcher and the whole group. Filming enabled to observe the accurate number of children’s initiatives and to compare results both within and be-tween the sessions. Children’s basic sense of security was supported by selecting friends to the small group. According to the results, it can be said that the children were able to relax quickly and even more shy children were able to make more initiatives. Based on this intervention it can be stated, that drama support children by empowering their self-expression skills. The results also showed that there were differ-ences between different drama methods concerning the effects on children’s self-expression both in individual and group level. Sessions displayed as a small group activity supported children’s self-expression skills to come forth at the individual level in almost all the areas studied.
