The purpose of my Bachelor’s Thesis is to study pedagogical leadership as a concept and a practice in Finnish music institutes. Pedagogical leadership is a current topic in art institutions even though there is little research on the subject in this certain context in Finland. Pedagogical leadership has been studied more at schools and kindergartens and this Bachelor’s Thesis views mostly that material when defining pedagogical leadership. This study aims to build understanding about pedagogical leadership as a concept and as real practices by focusing on the existing literature and by studying music institute principal’s perceptions of pedagogical leadership. During the study the notion that pedagogical leadership is a multi-dimensional and obscure phenomenon got strengthened. The study is qualitative. Data was collected by interviewing a principal of one music institute in Helsinki Metropolitan area. Theme-centred interview was used as a research method and the data was analysed by qualitative content analysis. The results show that the principal’s perceptions of pedagogical leadership can be construed as balancing between bounds and liberties. The meaning of common values is emphasized. Permissiveness and value-based leadership are essentially linked with the principal’s perception of pedagogical leadership. In practice the principal sees dialog, value discussions and projects as important methods for his own pedagogical leadership. Human resource management and shared leadership are also salient for pedagogical leadership in the principal’s view.
