Kulutusvalinnat nähdään yhtenä elämäntyylimme ilmentäjänä sekä ilmastonmuutoksen aiheuttajana tämän päivän yhteiskunnassa. Tasapainoinen luontosuhde ja maapallon resurssit huomioiva kulutuskäyttäytyminen olisi ihanteellinen tavoite tulevaisuutta ajatellen. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena onkin selvittää aiemman tutkimuksen pohjalta, mitkä tekijät hankaloittavat nuorten aikuisten ekologiseen kuluttamiseen pyrkimistä ja tasapainoisen luontosuhteen saavuttamista. Tutkielmassa luodaan kuva nuorten aikuisten kulutusympäristöstä ja tämänhetkisen kulutuksen roolista. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnetään inhimillisen ekologian teoriaa ajatusmallina luonnon ja ihmisen tasapainoiseen suhteeseen. Tutkielma toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena, jossa tarkempana tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin kuvailevaa narratiivista kirjallisuuskatsausta. Tutkielmassa pyrittiin vastaamaan asetettuun tutkimuskysymykseen aiemmasta tutkimuksesta luodun synteesin perusteella.

This thesis was inspired by the question how handicrafts are and could be used as a part of rehabilitation of people with mental disorders. The same questions have earlier been dealt with by for example Sinikka Pöllänen (2006 and 2008). This study explores how young adults living with mental disorders experience handicrafts in a culture orientated workshop. The target is to describe, analyse and explicate the participants’ communal perspective to handicrafts. The data of this qualitative study was collected through group discussion with the workshop community of Leikkiväki ry. The data was analysed with qualitative content analysis. As a member of this community which I study I possess experience and knowledge of this community that surpasses the mere data collecting period. My positionality thus gives the study perspective that resembles ethnographic methods. The study shows that negative experiences in handicrafts in school have a strong influence on how young participants of mental health rehabilitation experience handicrafts later on. For the participants community spirit, easiness of doing and atmosphere that does not stress on performance are important elements of the workshops of Leikkiväki ry. The variety of activities and craft techniques, possibility to experiment and the alternation of holistic craft and ordinary craft were found meaningful. For many of the participants initiation of new and unfamiliar activities was very difficult for example because of feelings of inferiority and selfcriticism. The fundamental experience shared by many of the participants seems to be the fear of failure. During the time spent in the workshop experiences of handicrafts seemed to become more positive. Concrete doing was found to help forward from the oppressive inactivity. Handicrafts have obviously rehabilitative effects at workshop surroundings. The findings affirm the prior studies that handicrafts can support mental well-being and work as part of the rehabilitation process and be a therapeutic tool.

The purpose of this thesis in home economics is to present how young people makes a home out of their first dwelling. The thesis examines things done and felt after moving to ones first housing, which is in their own control, and how these things affect in shaping the feel of home. The hypothesis was that the home was made with the help of objects, for example furniture, but also by getting used to the dwelling and its properties or by modifying them. It was also assessed that when moving to the first dwelling, the process would be a bit different than when moving an already established households. The focus of this thesis is on the new residents’ actions and feelings. Former studies close to this subject show that the making of home can be done by a variety of ways, which might result in a feeling of home. A theme interview was conducted for five young adults, who had moved to live on their own at the ages between 16 and 22. They had lived in their dwellings from one to four years. One of the subjects had moved and still lived with their spouse, the others lived alone. Subjects were found by sending an invitation to a mailing list of university students and to a Facebook group of organization providing housing for young people. After transcribing the interviews, the 16-page material was examined for the theme relating expressions which were divided into sub-groups. The main theme is making of home, and sub groups are safety, property, social matters, and actions, senses & premises. The youth who had moved to their first dwellings had turned them into homes with objects, gathered free of charge from childhood home, friends and close relatives or bought as used or new. Social relationships and living everyday life at home also benefitted forming the feeling of home. The traces of former residents, unfamiliar sounds and the lack of objects due to the dwellers economic situation slowed down settling a home. The lack of felt security prevented the feeling of home, which could also be lost at the end of a relationship. Even after forming a feeling of home, home and its object world was adapting in a constant move.

Objectives. The objective of this study was to find out how happy young adults are and what factors their happiness consists of. In addition, the aim was to find out whether there are differences in happiness between young adults with and without a family and between women and men. The main background theories of this study are the theory of self-determination and the basic psychological needs. These theories suggest that people are at their happiest when they can follow their inner motivation and feel they are voluntary, capable and that they belong. Previous studies have shown that young adults living in a welfare state are on average quite happy and satisfied with their lives. The most important aspects of happiness are family, relationships, health, and a sense of competence. Methods. The survey was conducted with an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of three areas after the background information area. The first part studied positive emotions, the second part studied life satisfaction and the third part studied factors affecting happiness. 55 people answered, of which 52 young adults were included in the processing of the material. The average age of the participants was 28.9 years. 41 of them were women, 10 were men and one was other-gendered. The quantitative results of the study were treated with average analysis and the qualitative results with content analysis. Results and conclusions. In general, the participants were quite happy. Positive feelings were experienced more often than negative ones, and the life satisfaction rate was 3.8 on a scale of 1 to 5. When comparing groups, young adults with families were slightly happier than young adults without families, and men were happier than women. The most important factors affecting happiness were children, friendships, life partner, love and family. In the light of this study, it can be said that young adults are generally happy. In addition, starting a family has a positive effect on happiness, although it reduces the importance of other happiness-affecting factors.

Goals. The aim of this study was to examine what sort of achievement goal orientation profiles it is possible to identify among young adults in work life and how differently motivated young adults differ regarding wellbeing at work. Achievement goal orientations describe ones general orientations and tendencies towards learning. They are associated with different patterns of goals, meaning, coping, and behavior. This tendency develops through individuals experiences. Work wellbeing is examined with subjective perceived eagerness and burnout. Burnout can be defined with three dimensions, it includes exhaustion, cynicism and inadequacy. It is important to examine the connection between wellbeing and motivation in order to support young adults’ work wellbeing and decrease and prevent possible burnout. Methods. The data (N = 170) was collected from young adults working and living in Helsinki Area. Participants filled in questionnaires that measured work motivation and - wellbeing. In this study, person-oriented approach was utilized. In this approach, it is crucial to identify dif-ferent subgroups and examine group differences. Participants were divided into groups by using Two-Step Cluster analysis. Group differences in engagement and burnout were exam-ined by means of analysis of variance. Results and conclusions. Three different achievement goal orientation groups were identified. The groups were labelled as mastery-, performance-, and avoidance-oriented. Mastery-oriented young adults expressed higher engagement and lower inadequacy and cynicism at work than the other groups. There were no differences in wellbeing between performance- and avoidance-oriented. It seems that striving for learning and mastery is especially beneficial in terms of well-being. The result was in line with previous studies examining the connection between motivation and wellbeing.

Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena.

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate what kinds of achievement goal orientation groups can be identified among young employees and to examine how the groups differ in experiences of team atmosphere, job-education correspondence and the length of the employment. In this study, motivation was examined through the concept of achievement goal orientation and team atmosphere through the notion of psychosocial work environment. The study concentrated on a specific age group, which has not been common in work motivation studies. The aim was to acknowledge a wide set of different kinds of goals at work, and therefore an instrument assessing five types of achievement goal orientations was used (mastery-intrinsic, mastery-extrinsic, performance-approach, performance-avoidance and avoidance orientation). The study focused on young adults, aged 18-30, in their working life. The respondents (n = 170) were classified into goal orientation groups by utilizing a person-oriented approach and two-step cluster analysis. Analysis of variance and cross tabulation were performed to examine the group differences. Three goal orientation groups were found in the data: mastery-oriented (46 %), performance-oriented (26 %) and avoidance-oriented (28 %). On average, the employees in this sample demonstrated high levels of mastery-intrinsic and mastery-extrinsic orientations. Mastery-oriented employees evaluated their team’s atmosphere to be better than the other two groups. Mastery-oriented young adults reported more often than expected that their job corresponded strongly to their education, whereas avoidance-oriented reported most that their job did not correspond to their education at all. Regarding the length of the employment, the groups did not differ from each other. The results of the study indicate that by investing in the team solidarity, the mastery-oriented attitude of young employees can be supported. The results are also a strong argument for the importance of helping young adults in their challenges in the context of work and other areas of life.

Objective. Today almost everyone has access to the internet and thus the incidence of internet-related mental problems has also increased. Youth and young adults in particular are at risk for experiencing these problems because they use the internet more compared to the rest of the population. Loneliness is common among young people and they often gravitate toward the internet to alleviate their feelings of loneliness. This type of internet usage can be problematic, meaning that it is pathological, compulsive and harmful to the user. The objective of this review is to examine the association between loneliness and problematic internet use among youth and young adults. Methods. The studies that were included in this review were as recently published as possible and examined the association between loneliness or related experiences and problematic internet or Facebook use among youth and young adults. Keywords that were used to search for the studies were loneliness, problematic internet use, internet addiction, problematic facebook use, youth and young adults. The search was carried out utilizing the Google Scholar search engine. Results and conclusions. Based on this review there is a positive association of some magnitude between loneliness and problematic internet use. The association is likely bidirectional, meaning that problematic internet use causes feelings of loneliness and feelings of loneliness increase problematic internet use. In the future longitudinal studies are required to form a more thorough understanding of the phenomenon because loneliness and problematic internet use are both phenomena that develop relatively slowly over a long period of time. Problematic internet use as a phenomenon is diverse and appears to be widely connected to mental well-being, so understanding the causes behind it helps healthcare and educational institutions develop services to prevent it and its harmful effects.
