Ambitions. The main focus of this research is to study links between attributions and self-esteem from young adults` point of view. The framework for this research is in Susan Harter`s theory of self-esteem and Bernard Weiner`s attribution theory. The topic for this study developed from my personal interest towards social psychology and its many phenomena. When becoming a teacher, I feel the need to be on top of this topic since self-esteem is the basis for one's actions. In this research, the goal is to develop means to support children and adolescents` self-esteem. Previous research proves that negative attributes towards themselves are connected to low self-esteem whereas persons with strong self-esteem do not feel the need to blame themselves when experiencing a failure. Methods. I executed this bachelor`s thesis as a quantitative research, where I analyzed Risto Hotulainen and Kristiina Lappalainen`s (2012) control research material. The people participating in this research were 30-year-old young adults, who were sent a questionnaire in December 2012. This questionnaire was answered with 167 young adults during spring 2013. In this research, I compared the control research`s four attribution groups` averages and dispersions ergo variances in social, study and work-related situations. I studied the possibility to statistically recognize the significant differs between these groups. As my method, I used variance analysis. Results and conclusions. The research indicated that the group with attributions towards themselves, had statistically significant lower self-esteem experiencing failure comparison to the other attribution groups. This means that when a person accuses himself in experiencing failure, he has low self-esteem. The same result occurs in both study and work-related situations. This result supports my theory's summary. In these results' point of view, it is reasonable to state that supporting ones` self-esteem and the formation of attributions is important. Throughout this, it is possible to build ones` self-esteem and motivation, which fosters for example learning. It is crucial for teachers to recognize attributions and their meanings to self-esteem because one's well-being develops when self-esteem is being established.

The purpose of this Bachelor’s Thesis was to depict loneliness experienced by university students who moved to the capital area in the beginning of their studies as diversely as possible. The research tries to achieve deeper understanding of the multidimensional phenomenon through eyes of the university students, who moved to the capital area. The research was implemented by collecting free-form essays or essays based on support questions from the university students, who moved to the capital area. Data were collected from members of the student organizations and nations of University of Helsinki and the student organizations of Aalto University. Data were procured both via e-mails and electronic forms. 36 responses were received, and 27 of those were included in this research. Limited data were analyzed with data based content analysis method. In the essays of the university students the clearest causes for loneliness were the exiguity of social relationships and external factors. Most writers described that loneliness experiences were related to scarce social contacts and the different culture of the new place. It can be concluded, that university students highlight multidimensionally different things of loneliness in the beginning of the studies, but the data show that the meaning of few social relationships is essential in the experience of loneliness. The impression of individualistic culture presented in social debate may complicate the help seeking because of the ideal of this culture. However, the data seems to suggest that most of the young adults moving to new places need specifically social support from their equals and intimates during the critical phase of their life in the beginning of studies.

In this research, I studied what goals young adults have and what they interpreted was a reason for their failures in past. I interviewed four young adults who told about their goals. Research questions were, what goals young adults have and, how they explain their failures. The material from interviews was analyzed with a content analysis method. Young adults, who worked as knowledge workers, goals had six categories. Categories were, own career, education, financial security, maintain close relationships, to fulfill oneself and health. Young adults interpreted lack of ability and uncontrollable factors to cause failures. Flexible and variables reasons were interpreted to cause failures. In this research, I was interested about young adults, whom work as knowledge workers. Age, socio-economical background and educational level might alter the results.
