    Purpose. The aim of the study was to find out what has been studied about teaching methods used for environmental education and sustainable development in elementary schools. Here the environment is the natural environment and sustainable development is the ecological sustainability. The research question regarded how to teach environmental education in elementary school so that the pupils get knowledge, attitudes and also change their behaviour. This study is a systematic litteratury study and compares different environmental education teaching methods and the result achievd by them. Methods. This is a systematic litteratury study. The used articles were found searching by the Helsinki University Library’s database Helka and by Google Scholar. The aim was to find articles related to Environmental Education teaching methods in elementary schools and to compare the results related to the pupils’ knowledge, attitudes and behavior about protecting the ecological environment. Successful combinations of keywords were Eco-School or Environmental Education, Primary School or Elementary School and Teaching Methods. 10 articles about different environment-regarded teaching methods were chosen for this study. Of the articles 2 used qualtitative methods and 8 used quantitative methods. The research was carried out in Great Britan, Turkey, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, USA, Israel, Greece and Australia. Results and conclusions. The pupils environmentally related actions can be affected by regulr long-term Environmental Education that lasts. Outdoor education is also good for motivating the pupils to learn about about nature and for learning better attitudes towards the environment. Favorable was also to teach environmental issues practically and related to the pupil’s local environment. It was hard to prove relationship between knowledge and attitudes.
