The starting point for this thesis was the occasionally made notion that music has a positive impact on language learning. The aim of the literature review was to find out what has been studied on the use of songs in learning a new language since 2008. The literature review examines the impact of singing on learning a new language and seeks to find out whether singing has a direct or indirect effect on language learning. The thesis was carried out as a descriptive literature review. Peer reviewed studies and dissertations dealing with singing and second language learning were used as the material. Topics and results relevant to the research problems were considered. In many cases singing appears to be useful in supporting second language learning. Singing was beneficial for example in learning new vocabulary and pronunciation as well as in reducing foreign language anxiety. However, when using songs in language learning, the songs must be carefully selected and the practical implementation thoughtfully considered to suit the purpose. Songs that are both pleasant and interesting and meet the learning objectives of each situation support language learning most effectively. Singing together is more motivating than singing alone.
