This research aims to describe, how employees have experienced the development discussions in the workplace. Development discussions have gained quite an established status in Finnish organisations, but the benefits and experiences have been controversial. The used approach was focused on the quality of the interaction: dialogue, ordinary conversation, monologue and debate. In addition, the development discussion was considered as a process of three parts: preparation, discussion and follow-up. The intension of this research was to investigate what kind of interaction there is in the discussions, do the three different parts exist and how they influence on satisfaction with the discussions. Also, the impacts of the background were investigated. The research was performed as a quantitative study. The empirical data was collected from Facebook, and the material consisted of 76 answered questionnaires. The response rate reached 11,9 %. There were 30 Likert scale questions, which were analysed by statistic methods, such as average numbers and correlations. The answers cannot be generalised because of the discretionary sample. The research demonstrates, that 30 % of the discussions were estimated as very useful and 20 % not useful. Higher educated workers are more satisfied with the discussion than those of lower education. There were dialogical features in one of the third of the discussions. There were features of ordinary conversations in 7 %, debates in 5 % and monologues in 5 % of the discussions. The rest did not get as distinct features in this research, so they can be categorised as something between these different interactions. In addition, the results show, that preparing for the discussion works better than the follow-up. 35 % of the answerers are content with the preparation, but only one of ten examinees thinks the follow-up is adequate. Preparation, follow-up and dialogical features correlated positively with the satisfaction. Therefore, by rehearsing skills of dialogue, and focusing more on preparation and follow-up, the development discussions could possibly be improved. It can be tentatively concluded, that by focusing on these factors, it is possible to develop the image and the benefits of development discussions.
