Goals. This literary review analyses inter-professional interaction using relational agency, relational expertise and common knowledge as the theoretical framework (Edwards, 2010). These three concepts are based on cultural-historical activity theory and examined through three different perspectives and aspects of interaction: subject of activity, object of activity and systems where activity is realised. Edwards combines these three aspects of interaction, focusing solely on the interaction itself and negotiations in it, the main goal being expanding object of activity. The goal of this thesis is to research how relational agency, relational expertise and common knowledge are used and emphasised to explain inter-professional work, how they are relationally positioned during inter-professional interactions and how empirical data of this research is developing relational theory. My research questions are: 1. How are relational agency, relational expertise and common knowledge used and conceptualised when examining inter-professional work? 2. How is the chosen empirical data developing relational theory? Methods. The style of this research is literary review. Qualitative meta-analysis is the chosen method for this thesis including aspects of qualitative meta-synthesis, which enabled theoretical examining and interpreting different definitions. The data for this research comes from eight articles of which I chose four (to allow) for more specific analysis and synthetisation. Results. The Answer for the first research question: The results indicate that relational agency, relational expertise and common knowledge are used and realised through the structure of interaction and core knowledge of subjects. Furthermore valuing the knowledge in relation of the subject’s core expertise, values and object of activity is part of creating shared understanding of the object of activity and possibly expanding it. The way relational agency, relational expertise and common knowledge are positioned in relation to subjects and object of activity affects inter-professional work. The Answer to the second research question: Relational agency, relational expertise and common knowledge are all needed when inter-professional interaction occurs in the framework of hierarchical power structures in a system. The object of activity can be divided into short term and long term objects of activity.
