The aim of this study was to see what kind of themes about social media and its impacts can be found from the studies made in the field of youth studies. This study also examined what has already been studied about the subject, what kind of results have been found and what kind of themes would be interesting to study in the future. Social media has grown in number and developed significantly in the past decade. Its impacts in the life of teenagers have been studied to some extent, but since the phenomenon is still new, there are not so many results. The purpose of this study was to collect previous research on the subject, compile the results and contemplate the need of further research. This study is a descriptive literature review. 11 researches were reviewed in this study, all made in the years of 2006-2016. The researches were found from different databases in Finnish and in English. The researches reviewed in this study showed, that the role of social media in the life of teenagers has grown significantly in the past decade. Social media can be seen as a part of teenager’s lives and it is used as a natural part of communication, friendships and self-expression.
