Fiction affects our values, our ideas of stereotypes, and our world view. Thus we can not ignore what children, the youth and adults watch during their screen time. Currently Finnish children's movies are thriving. They collect more and more viewers every year beating even American blockbusters. The objective of this thesis is to study the representations of teachers and school in Finnish children's movies. What do children learn about teachers and school by watching movies even before they attend school themselves? The research material of this thesis consists of ten Finnish children's movies that include at least one teacher character. The methodological approach selected is data-oriented content analysis. The research questions are about what kind of teachers there are in Finnish movies and which methods are used to build these characters, how the teachers affect the story and how they demonstrate school in the movies. In addition, teaching and its challenges are also presented in the light of relevant literature. This thesis also includes information about media and movie education. In these 21st century children's movies there are 20 teacher representations. Half of them are male and half are female. Some of the teachers are in small support roles and some are among the leading characters of the movie. Whereas some characters are comical, others are mean and even a little scary. In every movie, school is represented as a nice or neutral space to be in. In all of the movies, going to school is a part of life for children and in some of the movies, it is seen even as a privilege.
