In my master's thesis I examine Theodor W. Adorno's view of aesthetic experience in the context of modern philosophy and art. My main focus is on understanding the relationship of the aesthetic and the discursive, which has been in the center of the theory of autonomous art since Immanuel Kant. For Adorno, aesthetic experience, being an unleashed experience of negativity, enhances the individual's abaility to understand their societal context. Indeed, for Adorno, art has its social and historical legitimacy and meaning only insofar as it is autonomous, or, rather, supposes autonomy.
