Raúl García Zárate is the Peruvian guitarist of greater significance in the 20th century. Despite his undeniable importance, there was not a systematic approach on his musical work. This thesis has the purpose to develop such approach by delimiting the main fields in the study of his life and musical work, taking into account the socio-cultural context in which they unfold and, also, the creative processes that operate in his artistic production. As a result of the systematization process of a considerable amount of sources, this thesis presents a division for the study of his life, which can be organized into three phases: first, infancy and youth in Ayacucho (1931 1949); second, the migration period in Cuzco and Lima, and the beginning of his recordings (1950 1977); and finally, the development of his artistic activity on international level (1978 2005). Since the socio-cultural influences on the artistic production, this chronology will help also toward an approach to the creative stages of Raúl García. Also, this study attempts to describe an aesthetic of the Raúl García ́s musical work. Then, it presents a classification of his repertoire which will be useful in an extensive analysis of his repertoire. This classification has taken into account the characteristics of musical practice (collective and individual repertoire) and socio-geographical factors (local styles and Andean social structure). Likewise, after introducing a conceptual framework on the entity of musical work, this thesis includes an analysis model applied to the two main creative processes of the musical work of Raúl García: arrangement, as a creative process, and performance, as a dynamic of the creative process. Finally, it is presented a selection of the main techniques of Raúl García ́s performance. Then, it is described the technical procedures (human body and hands position, production of sound, vibrato and pizzicato) and the processes of syncretism between the classic guitar and other techniques developed in the Andean context. In this framework, an evaluation is developed on the studies related to the guitar tunes used in Ayacucho and, specially, in the repertoire of Raúl García. Besides, the appendix of this thesis includes the chronology of life, a catalog of recordings, a list of musical works and transcriptions and, also, the materials for the musical analysis developed in this thesis. Among its main goals, this research contributes to improve our knowledge on Raúl García ́s life and creation stages. Also, it determines the extension of his repertoire and underlines the central issues that characterize his aesthetic one and individual style. These issues will be deepened in later investigations, based on an exhaustive analysis of the musical work of Raúl García.
