Piik, Teemu (2021)Recent COVID-19 pandemic caused remote working in software production at unseen scale. Many teams and organisations had to switch to remote working from predominantly on-site working virtually overnight. In practise this meant that for many software production profes sionals the working environment changed from on-site co-located office environment to working from home alone. This thesis aims to identify possible remote working related challenges, ad vantages and adaptation in software production teams during the COVID-19 period. From this is constructed a collection of recommendations on how to improve remote working in software production. This thesis uses earlier studies from remote working and most recent studies of remote working during the COVID-19 period while also a case study was conducted and these results were combined in the discussion chapter. Case study was conducted as a qualitative interview study held to 9 software production professionals and results of the study analysed using thematic analysis. This thesis identifies remote working related challenges, but also advantages and a need to adapt within software production teams. Most common challenges included decreased communication and team cohesion, but also a number of more personal issues like increased stress and loneliness. Typically there was great variation on amount and impact of challenges, advantages and adaptation in individual, team and organisational level.
