In today’s landscape, the European Union (EU) finds itself at a pivotal juncture. In recent years, the EU has grabbled in crises, with headlines dominated by contentious debates over its migration and asylum policies, along with struggles to combat the rule of law backsliding in certain Member States. What was initially founded as a union primarily focused on creating an internal market built upon the four freedoms has evolved into a multifaceted political entity dealing with a wide array of fields. Given this context, this paper integrates the complexities of EU migration and asylum policy with the rule of law, with the objective of establishing a holistic understanding of the relationship among these themes. To achieve this, the paper begins by identifying key challenges within both the internal and external dimensions of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). Subsequently, it places these findings within the broader context of the rule of law. The paper’s findings reveal the intricate interplay of these themes and their respective issues, emphasizing the need for comprehensive and unconventional approaches to arrive at viable solutions. This paper contributes by proposing a roadmap that outlines the order in which the EU should address these challenges within the CEAS.
