Objectives. News coverage can affect what we think and how we think about it. News coverage has the potential to raise awareness of important societal issues in the general public and to guide the way they are addressed and understood. This study examines Yle's handling of online news about the new open teaching spaces in schools through the themes found in them. The aim is to create an understanding of how open teaching spaces are extruded and to consider what kind of image it creates for the average reader. Methods. The research material consisted of 17 digital Yle news articles published between 2016 and 2020. I looked in particular at the content areas presented to the reader of the articles and the aspects that belong to them. I analyzed the themes in the articles using content analysis, and compiled thematic entities based on the findings. Results and conclusions. Three main themes could be found in the data: health, change in teaching, and physical aspects. Health presented perspectives on symptomatic students, concentration, and physicality, which included both movement around the premises and ergonomics at work. The change in teaching introduced new teaching methods, the support received by students and the pedagogical change brought about by openness. The last theme, Physical Aspects, opened up perspectives on the use of facilities in the daily life of the school, the furniture and the construction of the school, which also presented the economic aspect. All themes presented the good and bad aspects of the topic relatively evenly, with the exception of individual news reports. The highlighted themes were not surprising and provided the reader with a comprehensive overview of open teaching spaces.
