The purpose of this thesis is to examine the relationship between the national core curriculum for basic education to music text books of elementary instruction, and also to compare the guidance of the curriculums from year 1970 and 2014 on the music instruction of the grade one and grade two. Also this thesis compares the music text book from 1980's called Piiri Pieni Pyörii (used in elementary instruction) to a music textbook published in 2015 called Saa Laulaa! 1-2 (used in elementary instruction as well). Do these text books reflect the emphasis of the national core curriculum or is this responsibility left to the teachers' capabilities. In earlier text book research it has been noted that text books influence attitudes both by text and design and music text books can entail hidden curriculums. Music text books used elementary instruction have not been studied before in Finland. This thesis is based on text book research and the research method is context analysis. This research found out that the music text books used in elementary instructions reflected the alignments of the national core curriculum to some extent. Some parts of the music text books differed from the guidance of national core curriculum. The national core curriculum for basic education has changed significantly from 1970 to 2014. Now the emphasis is increasingly placed on co-operation, child participation and creation of positive team spirit while teaching music for elementary classes.
