Twin pregnancy and birth are regarded as high-risk compared to singletons. Much of the research data regarding twins is derived from singleton birth data, but due to the highly increased risk of perinatal mortality and morbidity in twins, it is a very different experience. This study aims to review literature about characteristics of twin birth including pregnancy complications, preterm labor and methods of delivery in twins. The aim is to discuss their potential effects on childbirth experience for deeper understanding of twin birth experience. The study also reviews 10 twin births as part of a wider study called Tyyni, in which all birthing mothers in the Helsinki Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS) maternal hospitals in Finland during 10/2021-8/2023 were asked to participate. The study includes 1734 subjects of which 10 subjects gave birth to twins. Data regarding their twin pregnancies and births were collected from electronic patient records, including a childbirth experience questionnaire subjects answered in the maternity ward. A number of risk-factors in twin pregnancy and childbirth could contribute to a more negative childbirth experience. A negative experience has a wide range of effects on the wellbeing of the mother and therefore the entire family. In the cases reported, the overall childbirth experience of birthing twins was considered positive, with highest scores given to behavior of midwives and the support person. Further research is required in order to develop effective methods to improve childbirth experience in birthing mothers.
