This thesis evaluates how Philippine newspapers present the issue of journalist killings in the Philippines through a content analysis of 59 newspaper articles published from 2008 to 2012. The primary goal of this thesis is to identify possible recommendations for journalists to effectively write articles that can draw attention to the issue of journalist killings. This study answers the following research questions: 1) How much freedom of the press do journalists enjoy in a society where violence undermines democracy and press freedom? 2) How do Philippine newspapers bring the issue of journalist killings to prominence, and how do they urge the authorities to take actions? The research questions are answered through a close analysis of the different parts of the newspaper articles which are the headline, lede paragraph, and the body texts. The analyses show that there are some elements in each part of the newspaper articles that lacks coverage, which can draw significant attention to the issue of journalist killings if covered dominantly.
