Role models are found in all settings of life, and perhaps one of the most ordinary settings of them all is the interaction between children and their parents and other caregivers such as preschool personnel. This thesis is based on the interviews with parents of 3-5 year old preschool children and the personnel who takes care of these children at preschool. The themes of the interviews are physical activity, eating as well as sedentary behavior. The method used in the analysis is qualitative content analysis and through this analysis the role model behavior that the parents and preschool personnel use in different situations in their daily life is coded into categories of conscious, encouraging, permissive, restrictive as well as contradictive role modeling behavior. The main findings are that the preschool personnel often describe encouraging role model behavior in reference to eating with the children, while parents describe permissive, contradictive as well as restrictive role modeling behavior in reference to eating. In addition to eating, most restrictive role modeling is described by parents in reference to sedentary behavior. Preschool personnel also describe encouraging modeling when talking about situations involving physical activity, as do parents. Conclusively, parents and preschool personnel describe using somewhat different role modeling behaviors in different situations.
