The thesis tests the usefulness of structuration theory for the purpose of conflict transformation in the case of Syria. It examines the structuration of the Syrian society, the contradictions that have lead to the current conflict as well as locates the violent mechanisms that reproduce violence also in the current conflict. The study finds that the comprehensive overview on the society the structuration theory is able to provide is not only able to locate the violent mechanisms but also the non-violent native alternatives. Furthermore, it uncovers the underlying structures that enable and legitimise those violent mechanisms. Doing so, the theory will be able to provide indirect means to interfere in the violent mechanisms by peaceful means and thus, indeed, work towards conflict transformation and sustainable peace.
