The Social Identity Approach (Tajfel & Turner, 1979; Turner, 1987) has attracted increasing interest in the study of recovery from substance abuse. Interest is related, on the one hand, to increased research data on the importance of group memberships for health behavior (Best et al., 2016; Haslam et al., 2019) and, on the other hand, to the prevalence of recovery research in substance abuse and mental health field. Substance abuse has long been a special issue in social work (Pehkonen et al., 2019). Substance abuse has often been linked to the social environment, group norms and issues of social identification in both adolescents (Eisenberg et al., 2014; Fergusson et al., 2002) and adults (Frone & Brown, 2010; Livingstone et al., 2011; Neighbors et al., 2010). Therefore it is well reasoned to study how social identity is linked to the recovery from addiction. In my descriptive literature review, I am interested in what kind of research discussion social identity approach has inspired in the field of addiction recovery. The research material consisted of a total of 26 peer-reviewed international research articles. As a method of analysis, I used data-driven content analysis. The research discussion has taken place in Australia, the USA and England, but also in other European countries between the yeas or 2010 - 2021. The main topics in the research discussions have been: structuring of recovery as a change in social identity, the importance of a shared recovery identity for recovery groups, the importance of social networks, the development of substance abuse rehabilitation and critical discussions. Studies in the review provided evidence that recovery from substance abuse is supported by social identification with peer groups and substance-free social networks. The detachment from substance abuse was accompanied by an experiential change in social identity. According to the review, the perspective of social identity should be taken into account in substance abuse rehabilitation. The approach was criticized for ignoring the level of structural analysis and the normative approach to recovery.
