    Heterobasidion annosum s.l. is a devastating forest pathogen species complex which causes extensive damage to timber products in northern Europe. This study examined resistance of Norway spruce (Picea abies) in two field sites in Finland to annosum root rot (Heterobasidion parviporum) utilizing non-clonal stocks of P. abies. The northern field site in Rovaniemi does not have a historical presence of the pathogen, whereas the southern field site in Lapinjärvi has extensive historical presence of the pathogen. The goals of the study were to assess potential difference in susceptibility between the sites, as well as to examine the differences in susceptibility between tissue types and organs in the trees examined. The study inoculated treatment trees with H. parviporum, as well as mock inoculations without the pathogen for control trees. Six inoculations of one treatment type were placed into each of thirty randomly selected trees at both field sites. Three inoculations were done in the stem, and three in the roots, for a total of 360 inoculations. After being left in situ for three months, the trees were harvested, and resulting lesions in the phloem and xylem tissues in both the roots and stem were measured to determine the extent of visible lesion extensions from the inoculation point. Data collected from the experiment was analyzed in the context of three mixed effects models, with the assumption that larger lesions indicated lower resistance to the pathogen. The measurements considered as response variables for the models were the total length of the lesion, total width of the lesion, and total area of the lesion. Results indicated minor overall differences in the lesion sizes between site in the lesion width and lesion area models. Significant differences were found between tissue types in the lesion width, and lesion area models. Additionally, interactions between treatment and organ, as well as treatment and tissue were significant across all models. Several other interactions were significant across some, but not all models The results indicate that further research into the potential effects of historical or geographic isolation on the resistance of P. abies to H. parviporum should include strict genetic controls with crossing of genotypes across sites, and should also consider the differences due to abiotic factors which may influence resistance in field trials.

    Forestry is a hazardous industry globally. Physical conditions, legal frameworks and cultural norms can vary from country to country leading to different approaches to site safety management. There are international, national and regional legislation and guidelines which outline normative approaches land managers can utilise to protect forestry machine operators and the public from accident or injury. In this study, the approaches the health and safety management in forestry operations are assessed in two countries within the European Union –Scotland (as part of the UK member state) and Finland. While both countries practice sustainable forest management, it is shown that this is carried out under different legal frameworks leading to differences in approach to site safety planning. Other factors are shown to have an effect including cultural factors and land ownership patterns.

    Purpose of the study: The purpose of the study is to research the usage of different mixed reality devices in sales and marketing. The technology is improving fast and has now abled the mixed reality devices to be more accurate and precise. They can now deliver the expectations that they have not been able to do in the past. Growing number of companies are using this technology in their sales and marketing activities. There are numerous studies made on mixed reality devices but not in the area of sales and marketing. This study wants to find out how MR technologies work in sales and marketing and in different phases. Methods: The study consists of two parts. Study one investigates three groups: customers, companies that want to use MR technologies in sales and marketing and developers who design and create programs to these MR technologies. The groups answered series of marketing and sales related questions after using VR device called HTC VIVE. The first study compares three groups, companies, developers and customers. The second study seeks the differences between developers that an- swered questions related to MR, VR and AR. After these two studies there is a part to find out the goals of using these devices on sales and marketing. Results: The results in the study 1 showed that VR technology works in marketing when customers attention is wanted. In sales, closing a deal and making more profitable co-operation with customers, VR was preferred. The customers were more pessimistic towards VR than companies and developers. In the study two The MR technology was dividing companies and developers the most. VR was the most preferred in both marketing and sales activities. Still overall image of all the groups was positive towards these devices in sales and market- ing. Factor analysis test demonstrated that the goals of the usage of MR devices where loaded in three factors. 1. At the end of the sales and marketing funnel 2. Beginning of the sales and marketing funnel. 3. Branding. Overall the test revealed that MR technology had a positive image among all groups when used in sales and marketing. VR was preferred the most in every sales and marketing activity. AR and MR had differences among developers and companies. Companies preferred MR over AR and developers had an opposite opinion.

    Energiapuun käyttömäärät ovat kasvaneet viimeisen vuosikymmenen aikana huomattavasti. Energiapuun hankinta voidaan hoitaa ainespuun hakkuun kanssa samanaikaisesti integroituna hakkuuna tai erillishakkuuna, jossa hankittu puu menee vain energiakäyttöön. Energiakäyttöön menevästä puusta osa korjataan pieniläpimittaisena kokopuuna, jossa puuta ei erikseen karsita ennen sen haketusta. Kokopuun korjuumenetelmiä on useita, joista tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kokopuun paalausta sekä kokopuun hankintaa korjurilla. Kokopuupaalain on metsätraktorin alustalle kiinnitetty paalainyksikkö, joka sitoo paalainyksikköön syötetyt puut tiiviiksi paaleiksi. Paalainpohjaisen logistiikkaketjun tehokkuuden lisäys perustuu kasvaneeseen metsä- ja kaukokuljetuksen tuottavuuteen ja sen myötä alentuneisiin kustannuksiin. Korjuri pohjautuu myös metsätraktoriin ja huomattavimpana muutoksena tähän on korjuriin asennettu hakkuulaite. Korjurin logistiikkaketjun tehokkuuden lisäys perustuu ketjun metsätoiminnoissa tarvittavaan yksinkertaiseen yhden koneen korjuuketjuun. Korjuri tuottaa kokopuuta irtonaisena. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää kokopuupaalaimen ja korjurin toimintamallien eroja aikatutkimuksen avulla sekä vertailla koko logistiikkaketjujen kustannuksia toisiinsa. Tutkittu paalain oli Logman 811FC -alustakoneeseen pohjautuva Fixteri Oy:n valmistama Fixteri II -paalainyksikkö. Vertailukoneena oli Timberjack 810B -metsätraktoripohjainen korjuri. Molemmissa koneissa oli joukkokäsittelevä Nisula 280E+ -hakkuulaite. Paalien lähikuljetus hoidettiin Ponsse Wisent -metsätraktorilla. Koneiden tuottavuuksissa oli huomattavia eroja. Fixterin tuottavuus oli keskimäärin 33 % korjurin tuottavuutta alhaisempaa. Erityisesti Fixterin tuottavuuteen vaikutti sen paalainyksikön prosessoinnin aiheuttama odottamisaika, jolloin koneen kuljettaja ei voinut työskennellä normaalisti. Poistamalla kaiken odottamisen Fixterin tuottavuutta olisi mahdollista nostaa jopa 22 %. Metsäkuljetuksessa paaleja voitiin kuljettaa yhdessä lastissa 80–95 % irtonaista kokopuuta enemmän. Haketuksessa irtopuuaineksen usein vaatima tienvarsihaketus on noin kaksi kertaa terminaali- tai käyttöpaikkahaketusta kalliimpaa. Huolimatta paalien logistiikkaketjun tehokkuudesta ja hintaedusta, tässä tutkimuksessa saatujen tuottavuuksien perusteella ei paalauksen kilpailukyky ole vielä samalla tasolla korjurin kanssa. Mikäli Fixterin paalainyksikön odotusajat saadaan minimoitua, kasvaa Fixterin kilpailukyky huomattavasti. Myös laajemmat, useampia kohteita ja kuljettajia sisältävät vertailututkimukset voisivat tuottaa tarkempaa tietoa näiden menetelmien kustannuseroista. Tutkimuksessa pyrittiin selvittämään myös paalien kuivumista, mutta aikataulusta johtuen tästä ei saatu selviä tuloksia. Alustavat tulokset eivät kuitenkaan osoittaneet paaleille selvää etua kuivumisnopeudessa. Paalien kuivumista tulisikin selvittää tarkemmin pidemmällä aikavälillä.

    The objective of this thesis was to compare the effects of thermal modification under saturated steam and flowing steam on the Scots Pine and the Silver Birch, respectively. One method used in this article complied with the basic principles of traditional ThermoWood process. Treatment temperatures were chosen to be 180℃ and 200℃which are widely used in this method. Super-heated steam and flow-through system were applied in this system. Another one followed the principles as Wood Treatment technology (WTT) developed in Denmark. For this treatment, lower temperatures of 125℃ and 145℃ were applied. The treatment was conducted in a closed system with saturated steam. According to my results, modification under 125℃ saturated steam was ineffective for both Scots Pine and Silver Birch. 200℃ flowing steam is most suitable for the Silver Birch modification. While for the Scots Pine, I would recommend 145℃ saturated steam modification, because under this condition, there is a moderate bending and impact strength reduction but effective anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) improvement. The effects of thermal modification are better on the Silver Birch than the Scots Pine. Modification equipment and chosen of modified specimens need to be considered carefully as they influence the wood properties a lot. In general, mass loss as an indicator value to compare different thermal modification methods is not directly recommended.

    The importance of the computer and information technology has increased significantly with the introduction of the Internet. The technologies should not be reduced to selling and purchasing functions but should also be used as research and business intelligence tool, as well as information source. This study compares the performances of the Finnish and German sawmilling & paper industry by evaluating their public communication. The forest sector has been traditionally important for the economy of both countries and they belong to the global players. In conjunction with the performance analysis, a neural network tool is compiled, optimized and tested. It combines a study related categorization application and the Kohonen’s self-organizing map (SOM). The objective of the automated categorization is to lower manual work and to evaluate text contents more accurately – by taking also the possible future use into account. The research includes two interlinked approaches: web page and performance analysis. The web page analysis compares the design and content of the forest industry companies’ Internet sites. In addition, it is used to select and define the relevant enterprises for the performance analysis. 14 Finnish and 10 German sawmills, as well as 5 Finnish and 12 German paper and paperboard producers fulfilled the research requirements (data collection 2013). The performance analysis is implemented by a content analysis and SOM Tool. The word count data of the content analysis is sorted with a customised classification frame based on the Global Reporting Initiative Guideline and evaluated with the SOM. The SOM algorithms reduce multidimensional, large and complex data to lower dimensional maps which visualizes the distribution of the companies’ performance categories. The results indicate that the business cultures of the selected companies are similar. A closer examination reveals that the clustering by sector is more emphasized that by country. The more detailed determination of the SOM divides the paper sector further by their origin. Most obvious are the differences between sawmill and Finnish paper industry. The sawmill sector highlights especially product, service and macro-environment related aspects. Small German sawmills emphasized further tradition and history The paper sector stressed social responsibility, corporate structure, external activities and environmental issues. Inside the paper sector, the Finnish companies point out corporate strategy, development, organizational profile categories and economical performances. The German paper sector highlights in particular environmental issues and public relation. The web page analysis and related studies evaluate the corresponding categories similarly to the present research and thus support the results of the SOM approach.

    China’s high-speed economic growth has accelerated consumers’ disposable income evidently. With the improvement of living standards, people have increasingly been concerned about their life quality, especially when buying consumables like food, toys and clothing as well as durable commodities like furniture for their children. In the past ten years, the Chinese children's furniture market has developed rapidly, making up 9% of total furniture market. However, no studies concerning the analysis of consumer behavior in this market segment exist so far. The objective of this study is to fill this gap by examining Chinese consumers’ perceptions of children’s furniture based on their socio-demographics, their attitudes towards product, supplier and environmental attributes. The empirical part of the study focused on analyzing quantitative data, which were collected by using a structured questionnaire in Shanghai and Shenzhen of China.The data were analyzed by a wide array of statistical analysis methods using SPSS software package. The final sample size was made up of 299 respondents. The data reveal that females accounted for 67% of the total respondents, with 63% of all respondents being in the range of 31-40 years old and 23% in the range of 20-30 years old. The results indicate that safety and environmental friendliness were the primary consideration for parents to purchase children’s furniture. And supplier quality was detected as the central dimension when respondents perceived different attributes of children’s furniture. In addition, 83% of the respondents chose solid wood as the primary raw material for children’s furniture, and 35% of them stated that they were willing to pay 6-10% more for environmentally friendly children's furniture. The choice of environmentally friendly products was closely connected with consumers’ lifestyle and majority of respondents expressed positive attitudes towards healthy and sustainable lifestyle. However, Chinese consumers showed low brand awareness in the children’s furniture market and their price expectations on solid wood furniture were below current market levels. Nevertheless, the Chinese children’s furniture presents a tremendous market potential not only for wooden furniture producers but also for both domestic and international wood raw material suppliers.

    Increasing societal demands are driving forest industry companies to evaluate the impacts of their business activities more comprehensively. Corporate responsibility (CR) is not a new phenomenon to the industry sector as environmental considerations have been on the agenda of the firms for decades through the use of forest resources. Globalization and relocations of operations overseas have increased the general public's awareness of the societal effects of business. CR of major forest industry corporations has been studied extensively but a research gap was identified in the case of CR in small and medium-sized (SME) Finnish forest industry companies. The significance of SMEs is expected to grow within Finnish forest industry in the future as mechanical forest industry increases its relative importance. Based on literature this study suggests that SMEs should approach CR as a strategic issue, i.e., they should evaluate which aspects of this multidimensional phenomenon can affect the firm's ability to reach its objectives. The relatively limited resources of the firm should be allocated to those strategic CR issues. Empirical primary data was collected by interviewing the line managers of medium-sized Finnish sawmills. The managers were asked to identify sources of competitive advantage within the company, to give their definitions of CR and to discuss the potential of CR as a source of competitive advantage. The findings were congruent with earlier studies on SMEs in other industry fields. The firms often execute CR without identifying it and relate to CR through their key stakeholders (employees, community, customers). The interviewed line managers did not generally perceive CR to have potential as a source of CA. If CR is to be promoted amongst Finnish forest industry SMEs, robust business cases have to be presented to demonstrate the measurable benefits of CR. Practical examples of what CR incorporates in the smaller firm are required. Consumer studies are necessary to discover the value of CR stewardship perceived by the customers.

    This exploratory study aims to analyze the CR reporting by eleven largest forest products companies in North America. Both annual reports and sustainability reports produced in year 2006 by eleven largest forest products companies in North America were chosen for this very study. To ensure the comparability of the results, the study adopts the similar variables in operationalizations by Routto (2008), who studied the CR reporting of European forest products companies. The methodology applied in the study is content analysis. Mean, T-test and One-way Anova analysis were used in data analysis. Though all the three pillars of CR (economic, environmental, and social) were covered in their CR reporting, the North American companies seem to give more weight to Social Focus, followed by Economic Focus and Environmental Focus respectively, whereas the largest European companies considered Environmental Focus as the most important area, Social Focus the second, whereas Economic Focus was least emphasized. A number of notable differences and similarities between the European companies and the North American companies towards CR reporting were also identified. For example, the North American companies obviously seek for more efforts to co-operate with interest groups and business partners to ensure responsible actions than the European companies. The European companies emphasize energy consumption more frequently than the North American companies. Neither the European companies nor the North American companies perceived environmental welfare at the expense of corporate profits an important element concerning Economic Focus. It would be interesting to note that neither the European companies nor the North American companies considered shareholders, NGOs and forest owners as primary target audience groups in their CR reporting, since the communication benefits were not frequently mentioned for these stakeholder groups. The study also observes some variation of CR practices within a common industrial and cultural environment. The results suggest that the US companies seem to particularly emphasize a number of issues more than the Canadian companies, namely: 1) Business behavior, 2) Social principles & guidelines, 3) Internal communication, 4) Social focus, 5) External communication, and 6) Audience. No significant difference was found concerning Social & ethical accounting and Economic focus between the US companies and the Canadian companies. Sector of Integrated forest products placed notably much more weight on Social & ethical accounting than Sectors of Consumer products and Sector of Pulp & paper & packaging in this study, whereas no other significant difference was indicated by the pair-wise comparison of means between Sector and the nine summative variables respectively. In addition, sustainability reports seem to have much clear focus on environmental-related issues than annual reports, whereas issues concerning Social Focus and External Communication received more attention in annual reports than in sustainability reports. No further significant difference was suggested between Type of report and the nine summative variables in this study. In short, the comparison between the reports by North American companies and those by the European companies showed some regional variations in CR reporting. These regional characteristics include 1) the emphasis on Social Focus by North American companies, and Environmental Focus by European companies, 2) the emphasis on partnership by North American companies, and workplace safety by European companies, 3) the emphasis on employees’ benefits by North American companies, and customers’ benefits by European companies, 4) the emphasis on commitment of top management to CR by North American companies, and existence of CR policy statements by European companies, 5) the emphasis on recycled raw materials by North American companies, and energy consumption by European companies, and 6) the emphasis on profitability by North American companies, and investing to socially/environmentally responsible targets by European companies. Such differences could also be argued to be related to the different institutional arrangements in the regions. The comparison between different sectors suggests that, Sector of Integrated forest products emphasized Social & Ethical Accounting more than Sector of Consumer products and Sector of Pulp & paper & packaging, whereas Sector of Consumer products paid more attention to Economic Focus issues than the other two sectors. The results also suggests that, sustainability reports emphasized Environmental Focus more than annual reports, whereas annual reports clearly focused on Social Focus and External Communication more than sustainability reports.

    Corporate social responsibility and sustainability have become increasingly important in modern business practices. The purpose of this study was to examine the corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability practices and perceptions of small and medium-sized forest products companies in North Carolina (NC). These companies have less than 500 employees and most of the forest products companies operating in NC fall into this category. Research was carried out in two parts: first by conducting a content analysis of 22 websites of NC companies and second by conducting twelve semi-structured in-depth interviews with different company representatives to gain a deeper understanding of the practices and perceptions. The most frequently mentioned aspect in the websites was sustainability (48.6%), followed by CSR (19.8%). Most often mentioned CSR practices from the websites were safety and promotion of responsible forestry. Interviews identified social aspects of CSR as the most important for respondents. This is interesting since, according to earlier research, the forest industry tends to emphasize environmental aspects. The main drivers for CSR and sustainability were the owners and, to some extent, customers. Other stakeholders were not identified as important drivers. Interviews revealed that the company size is not really a defining aspect on implementation of CSR and sustainability, but it is instead a company specific initiative. Identifying and describing these effective patterns and practices of CSR and sustainability could help other small businesses create competitive advantages in forest products marketing. These practices can then be used as building blocks for sustainable and responsible business strategy.

    Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become increasingly important topic in forest industries, and other global companies, in recent years. Globalisation, faster information delivery and demand for sustainable development have set new challenges for global companies in their business operations. Also the importance of stakeholder relations, and pressure to become more transparent has increased in the forest industries. Three dimensions of corporate responsibility economic, environmental and social, are often included in the concept of CSR. Global companies mostly claim that these dimensions are equally important. This study analyses CSR in forest industry and has focus on reporting and implementation of social responsibility in three international companies. These case-companies are Stora Enso, SCA and Sappi, and they have different geographical base, product portfolios and therefore present interesting differences about forest industry strategy and CSR. Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has created the most known and used reporting framework in CSR reporting. GRI Guidelines have made CSR reporting a uniform function, which can also be measured between companies and different sectors. GRI Guidelines have also made it possible to record and control CSR data in the companies. In recent years the use of GRI Guidelines has increased substantially. Typically CSR reporting on economic and environmental responsibility have been systematic in the global companies and often driven by legistlation and other regulations. However the social responsibility has been less regulated and more difficult to compare. Therefore it has previously been often less focused in the CSR reporting of the global companies. The implementation and use of GRI Guidelines have also increased dialogue on social responsibility issues and stakeholder management in global companies. This study analyses the use of GRI´s framework in the forest industry companies´ CSR reporting. This is a qualitative study and the disclosure of data is empricially analysed using content analysis. Content analysis has been selected as a method for this study because it makes it possible to use different sources of information. The data of this study consists of existing academic literature of CSR, sustainability reports of thecase-companies during 2005-2009, and the semi-structured interviews with company representatives. Different sources provide the possibility to look at specific subject from more than one viewpoint. The results of the study show that all case-companies have relatively common themes in their CSR disclosure, and the differences rise mainly from their product-portfolios, and geographic base. Social impacts to local communities, in the CSR of the companies, were mainly dominated by issues concerning creating wealth to the society and impacting communities through creation of work. The comparability of the CSR reporting, and especially social indicators increased significally from 2007 onwards in all case-companies. Even though the companies claim that three dimensions of CSR economic, environmental and social are equally important economic issues and profit improvement still seem to drive most of the operations in the global companies. Many issues that are covered by laws and regulations are still essentially presented as social responsibility in CSR. However often the unwelcome issues in companies like closing operations are covered just briefly, and without adequate explanation. To make social responsibility equally important in the CSR it would demand more emphasis from all the case-companies. A lot of emphasis should be put especially on the detail and extensiveness of the social reponsibility content in the CSR.

    As the global economy grows rapidly, certain environmental and societal problems have become challenges. This pushes more and more global companies to integrate those concerns in their business operations, in the form of corporate social responsibility (CSR). This thesis analyzes leading global companies’ CSR performance by using forest and IT industry as comparable cases, in order to point out the strength and weakness of CSR practice, and to indicate the proposal for CSR development. The study also describes the differences in emphasizing CSR between forest industry and IT industry, and between globally and in China market. The method of content analysis is introduced to the study. Based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines as classification frame, relevant information from the CSR reports of analyzed sampling units was classified into corresponding indicators and then transformed into the numbers that represent companies’ CSR performance. The result of the study shows that on a global scale environmental and economic responsibilities are the mainly focused areas of CSR by global companies while companies’ performance of human rights responsibility is very poor. In the future, global companies should work harder on human rights by taking actions to analyze violent risks and prevent discrimination instead of only releasing policies. Concerning differences between industries, forest product companies emphasize economic, environmental and labor practice responsibilities much more than IT companies do. IT industry is able to learn the experience from forest industry to improve its weak areas. The other finding in the study is that nearly no global companies publish separate unit CSR reports in China or sufficient information of CSR activities in China. It indicates that CSR is still at the very beginning status in China and global companies are recommended to take more responsibility for its development.

    Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tutkia asiakkaiden havaintoja palvelun laatuun ja yrityksen imagoon liittyen. Laatuun ja imagoon liittyvät näkökohdat liittyvät tutkimuksessa Metso konsernin OneMetso konseptiin. Tutkimuksen kohteena olevat asiakasyritykset edustavat sellu- ja paperiteollisuutta sekä voimantuotantoa. Käsitteistöltään tutkimus perustuu laatua ja yrityksen imagoa käsittelevään kirjallisuuteen. Kirjallisuuskatsaus esittelee laatuun ja erityisesti palveluiden laatuun liittyviä erityispiirteitä. Olemassa oleva palveluiden laatua koskeva kirjallisuus perustuu pitkälti yritysten ja yksityishenkilöiden väliseen suhteeseen ja teoreettiselta pohjaltaan SERVQUAL tai Nordic model malleihin. Edellä mainittujen mallien ulottuvuuksia on hyödynnetty myös tässä tutkimuksessa, mutta painotus on yritysten välisessä (B2B) asiayhteydessä. Tämän alan tutkimuksia on tehty viime vuosikymmenenä. Tutkimuksen tulokset perustuvat kyselytutkimukseen joka on tehty Metson sellu- ja paperi sekä voimantuotannon asiakkaille. Kyselyn on tehnyt puhelinhaastatteluihin erikoistunut yritys. Kyselytutkimuksen vastaukset on tässä tutkimuksessa tilastollisesti analysoitu käyttäen ei-parametrista testausmenetelmää. Perustuen vastausten jakaumaan käytetty testausmenetelmä kaikille kysymyksille oli riippumattomien näytteiden Mann-Whitneyn U testi. Tilastollisen testauksen tuloksien perusteella nollahypoteesi hylätään kahdessa asiakkaille esitetyssä kysymyksessä kaikkiaan neljästätoista. Automation ja Power segmenttien asiakkaiden havainnot ovat yhteneviä useimmissa laatuun liittyvistä kysymyksistä. Saadut tulokset tukevat Metson One Metso konseptia. Jatkotutkimuksen aiheena toimisi keskittyminen yrityksen nykyisiin muuttuneisiin segmentteihin syventäen samallamkyselyn laatunäkökohtia.

    This thesis investigates the methods and principles used to calculate timberland return indices. By studying these existing indices and new possible methods, the study contributes to the accuracy and methodology of timberland return measurement. Attention towards timberland investing has been increasing among institutional investors, while at the same time timberland return indices are also being utilized by policy makers as supporting indicators for policy decisions. The possibility to measure timberlands returns exactly is understandably of great interest and a desirable goal. Previous literature does discuss the general aspects of timberland return measurement and index calculation, but very little about the actual index number theory and its implications to the timberland return measurement. For this reason, there exist some issues regarding the currently available indices that make them prone to bias and otherwise unfavorable and inappropriate in the context of index number theory. The four existing indices considered in this thesis are the NCREIF Timberland Index, John Hancock Timber Index, Timberland Performance Index and the index formula utilized by the Finnish Forest Research Institute. The results of the examination confirm the benefits of fully-regulated forest in index construction, as it offers a stable and comparable base for an index. Also the effects and trade-offs of price selection, interest rate and index frequency are presented and discussed in detail. The utilization of net present value in index construction, instead of the liquidation value, is a new approach utilized in this thesis and the issues regarding its use in index calculation are considered and assessed. The key finding of this thesis is that the index formula used by the Finnish Forest Research Institute suffers from a weighting problem and it is not consistent in aggregation. To overcome the index number problems present in the existing indices, the pseudo-superlative Montgomery-Vartia index formula is applied into timberland returns. It is shown that the index is consistent in aggregation and that it approximates closely the desirable superlative indices. As a result, this thesis advocates the use of Montgomery-Vartia index. It is more appropriate formula for timberland return measurement than the currently used or the other available index formulas are, and its implementation should therefore be considered.

    The conundrum between market entry and business development activities within innovation companies is generally regarded as a challenge. The energy industry as a whole is in a flux and the sustainable future requires drastic actions to be taken to reduce the effects of the global warming and in adaptation of a circular economy model. Using the industrial innovation company St1 Biofuels Oy as a case, this thesis will identify the decision-making components of an opportunity based target market analysis in a company, which operates in an industry with notable resource scarcity, policy regulations and variable business models. In response to this hypothesis, this study suggests an opportunity based target market analysis model that illustrates a new framework to study target markets in a systematic and analytical manner. For the purpose of the case with St1 Biofuels Oy, a market intelligence tool was created to store and process the market data and illustrate the most essential components of the theoretical model. The case study demonstrates the utilization of the opportunity model presenting the internationalization criteria and justification to a potential new R&D concept investment decision. The implications of this thesis contribute to the decision-making of the case and aid in demonstrating analytical justification for internationalization on a strategic decision-making level. This thesis introduces relevant literature to the topic and reflects the existing theories to the new model concept design. Structure and empiric base in this study were drawn together from two-stage data collection, including extensive market research and investment calculations along with semi-structured interviews with the specialists of the case company. The results of this thesis present a theoretical model and the functioning of the model is then piloted with the case study variables of St1 Biofuels Oy. Based on the discussion in this thesis, further research is suggested reflecting the model as a theoretical framework in strategic marketing planning and value-based selling studies.

    The goal of this research was to produce guidelines for an eco-labeling program of wood and paper products in the U.S. market. The factors affecting consumers’ willingness to pay for eco-labeled wood and paper products were examined using a metaregression analysis. A systematic literature review was conducted to examine what are the preferable on-product label characteristics. Results show that consumers in North America are willing to pay less for eco-labeled wood and paper products than European consumers. Wooden and durable goods are able to capture larger price premiums compared to less durable wood/paper products. Consumers are willing to pay more for eco-labeled products where the labels provide more information to the consumers. Among demographic variables, age is shown to positively influence the amount consumers are willing to pay for eco-labeled wood and paper products. Among desirable label characteristics contact information of the labeling agency and information about the environmental effects of the product were found important in addition to information enabling product comparison. Environmental non-governmental organizations are perceived as the most credible labeling providers as shown in past studies.

    Accounting firms need to stay along in the development of financial management digitali-zation. An important part of that is to implement new systems and develop a high-level expertise in them, creating a major competitive advantage. That way the growing demands of modern customers can be fulfilled. One part of the development is ERP expertise and implementations as new service products. The purpose of this research is to find out how those service products could be built to be as functioning as possible for different types of customers of an accounting firm and what are the main challenges to be considered. The research was conducted as a case study in a Finnish accounting office. The case was their own implementation project. Challenges occurred in the project were used to build up a suggestion on how to avoid the same ones in future projects. Based on the results of the research it can be said that the main challenges in an ERP im-plementation, for a company operating in Finland, relate to automation and especially monetary transactions and usage of reference numbers and their automatic allocations, foreign consultant’s understanding of the Finnish business environment, understanding the importance of testing and resourcing, process and system reengineering, change manage-ment, motivation and commitment of the employees and management as well as staying in budget and schedule.

    The use of remote sensing imagery as auxiliary data in forest inventory is based on the correlation between features extracted from the images and the ground truth. The bidirectional reflectance and radial displacement cause variation in image features located in different segments of the image but forest characteristics remaining the same. The variation has so far been diminished by different radiometric corrections. In this study the use of sun azimuth based converted image co-ordinates was examined to supplement auxiliary data extracted from digitised aerial photographs. The method was considered as an alternative for radiometric corrections. Additionally, the usefulness of multi-image interpretation of digitised aerial photographs in regression estimation of forest characteristics was studied. The state owned study area located in Leivonmäki, Central Finland and the study material consisted of five digitised and ortho-rectified colour-infrared (CIR) aerial photographs and field measurements of 388 plots, out of which 194 were relascope (Bitterlich) plots and 194 were concentric circular plots. Both the image data and the field measurements were from the year 1999. When examining the effect of the location of the image point on pixel values and texture features of Finnish forest plots in digitised CIR photographs the clearest differences were found between front-and back-lighted image halves. Inside the image half the differences between different blocks were clearly bigger on the front-lighted half than on the back-lighted half. The strength of the phenomenon varied by forest category. The differences between pixel values extracted from different image blocks were greatest in developed and mature stands and smallest in young stands. The differences between texture features were greatest in developing stands and smallest in young and mature stands. The logarithm of timber volume per hectare and the angular transformation of the proportion of broadleaved trees of the total volume were used as dependent variables in regression models. Five different converted image co-ordinates based trend surfaces were used in models in order to diminish the effect of the bidirectional reflectance. The reference model of total volume, in which the location of the image point had been ignored, resulted in RMSE of 1,268 calculated from test material. The best of the trend surfaces was the complete third order surface, which resulted in RMSE of 1,107. The reference model of the proportion of broadleaved trees resulted in RMSE of 0,4292 and the second order trend surface was the best, resulting in RMSE of 0,4270. The trend surface method is applicable, but it has to be applied by forest category and by variable. The usefulness of multi-image interpretation of digitised aerial photographs was studied by building comparable regression models using either the front-lighted image features, back-lighted image features or both. The two-image model turned out to be slightly better than the one-image models in total volume estimation. The best one-image model resulted in RMSE of 1,098 and the two-image model resulted in RMSE of 1,090. The homologous features did not improve the models of the proportion of broadleaved trees. The overall result gives motivation for further research of multi-image interpretation. The focus may be improving regression estimation and feature selection or examination of stratification used in two-phase sampling inventory techniques.

    Snowmelt timing has been proven critical to the phenology in subarctic and alpine ecosystems. Nevertheless, its impacts on the phenology of dwarf-shrub-dominated vegetation on high-latitudinal Fennoscandian fells are not yet sufficiently studied. This project focusses on the divergences in phenological timings and reproductive success caused by naturally different snowmelt timings in this area. The study site was on fell Saana in northwest Finland. The data was collected from a site covering three snowmelt timings located in two aspects (fully factorial, 4 replicates) from 20th of May to 4th of September, 2015, totalling 108 days. The phenological events (e.g. leaf unfolding, anthesis, and leaf colouring) of 12 species of three growth forms (dwarf shrub, forb, and graminoid) were recorded. The statistical analyses show that different snowmelt timings result in significant differences in the time points (expressed in day of year, DOY) of peak flowering and shoot elongation, as well as the green-leaved durations (days); however, flowering duration is rather constant across snowmelt timings. Significant differences are also found in the reproductive success of several species. The results suggest that in subarctic-alpine vegetation, an earlier snowmelt timing 1) elongates the duration of vegetative growth, 2) advances the timing of peak flowering while the flowering duration remains unchanged, and 3) potentially impedes reproductive success in some species, but generally the pattern is heterogeneous. Thus, snowmelt timing is causing divergences among the phenological traits and potentially within the reproductive success of dwarf shrub species in this area. In the long term, these phenomena may impact the local biodiversity and biochemical cycles, which may be a long-term effect of the shifting snowmelt timing due to global change.

    In Finland thinning quality is assessed on a yearly basis by the Finnish Forest Centre. During recent years the results of these assessments have been a source of concern within the coastal region of operation. Metsäliitto, being one of the largest forest operators within the coastal region and Finland as a whole, is concerned by the high residual stand damage found. Metsäliitto perform follow-ups on the feedback received from the Finnish Forest Centre but also performs thinning quality assessments off their own. The thinning quality method used by the Finnish Forest Centre is time consuming and therefore poorly suitable for use by wood procurement companies. This led to the development of an alternative method by Metsäteho Oy. Metsäliitto was represented in the work group that developed this new method but has chosen to develop a method of its own. The purpose of this master thesis is to clarify whether the results from Metsäliittos thinning quality assessment method correlate in a sufficient manner with those of the method developed by the Forestry Development Centre TAPIO. Furthermore the thesis study how the results of two alternative methods correlate. Focus is placed on residual stand damage but also the possibility of a potential connection between TAPIOs placement of sample plots and residual stand damage results is studied. As Metsäliittos method includes a complete inventory of soil compaction it is studied how TAPIOs and Metsätehos results hold up against those of Metsäliittos method. A study of the correlation between results for forwarder track distance between Metsäliittos and Metsätehos methods is also conducted. The sites of this study were chosen based on the Finnish Forest Centres random sampling for thinning quality assessments performed during 2010 and 2011. From those thinning quality assessments the ones performed in the Swedish speaking parts of Ostrobotnia where thinning actions had been performed by Metsäliittos contractors were sieved and chosen to form the sample of this study. The fieldwork of this study was performed in July 2011. Thinning quality assessments according to Metsäliittos and Metsätehos models were performed on all sites. The results of the thinning quality assessments performed according to TAPIOs method were acquired from the Finnish Forest Centre. This study being a method comparison study where the true values of the objects are not known, methods of analysis based on hypothesis testing was not used. In order to create an overview of the trends in results for the different methods, as well as their correlation to each other, Bland&Altman diagrams were created (Altman & Bland 1983 and Bland & Altman 1999). The main results of this study show that Metsäliittos and TAPIOs results for residual stand damage do not differ in a statistically significant way. Metsäliittos and Metsätehos results on the other hand are not to be compared. Metsätehos and TAPIOs results are not either to be compared which has been stated by Poikela (2003b). TAPIOs and Metsätehos methods estimate the proportion of soil compaction in a sufficient manner compared to Metsäliittos method. Furthermore it was concluded that results for forwarder track distance correlate well between Metsäliittos and Metsätehos methods. Any connection between TAPIOs sample plot placement and results for residual stand damage could not be detected. The conclusions of this study are that Metsäliittos and TAPIOs results for residual stand damage, with reservation for the small sample size of this study, are comparable. Metsäliittos and Metsätehos results are not compatible from which we conclude that Metsäliittos method is not replaceable with the one developed by Metsäteho. Nor shall Metsätehos method be used as a complement to Metsäliittos as one will then acquire two incompatible data sets. Both Metsätehos and TAPIOs results for soil compaction are compatible with those of Metsäliittos method. This could be utilized in order to improve the time effectiveness of Metsäliittos method. For further method improvement Metsäliitto could adopt Metsätehos method for determination of forwarder track distance. As results from Metsäliittos and TAPIOs thinning quality assessments can be compared without a loss of reliability, Metsäliitto could compile the results from their own assessments and TAPIOs assessments in order to get a more statistically representative picture of the quality of their thinnings. This would result in even better future possibilities of monitoring and evaluating how well the company’s goals are met.
