Previous research has indicated that bilingualism can affect cognition. Research has highlighted, how important it is for bilingual students to be able to utilize their linguistic background as support for their learning. Bilingual education has proved to be beneficial for the academic achievement of bilingual students. As the number of bilingual students in Finland increases, it is important to examine, what kind of tools can be used to support the needs of bilingual students, who do not attend bilingual education. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between bilingualism and learning and the ways in which bilingualism can be used to support learning. This study aims to understand how bilingualism affects cognition and learning and in what ways it is possible to utilize bilingualism to support learning. The method I have chosen to use in this study, is literature review. This method allows me to understand the topic in a broader scale. My sources included studies on the relationship between cognition and bilingualism as well as studies on bilingual education. I used the results of these studies to introduce the Buddyschool-model and the ways in which it can be used to support the learning process of bilingual students in Finnish basic education. The results of the literary analysis indicate that bilingualism can have a positive effect on cognition. However, often balanced bilingualism was a requirement in order to enjoy the cognitive benefits of bilingualism. The results also highlight the correlation between utilizing one’s bilingualism at school and academic achievement. Therefore, the Buddyschool-model in which older students teach younger students, offers a great opportunity to support bilingual students at school. In my master’s thesis I am interested to learn more about the effects of the Buddyschool-model on academic achievement.

Objectives. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which the mood varies between depressive state and mania or hypomania. In earlier studies it has been observed that the depressive episode of bipolar disorder might be often inaccurately diagnosed as recurrent depression or unipolar depression. This might lead to lengthening of the symptoms and at worst, to use of antidepressants without the simultaneous use of mood stabilizers which in turn might lead to mania or hypomania. Thus, the objective of this review is to study the distinctive factors of the depressive episodes between bipolar disorder type I and II and unipolar depression, emphasizing genetic factors, the symptoms during depressive episodes, comorbid disorders, subthreshold hypomanic symptoms and the effects of pharmacotherapy during the depressive episodes. Results and conclusions. In the review it was found that many factors distinguished the depressive episodes of bipolar disorder and unipolar depression although for comorbid disorders, especially for alcohol and substance dependence and abuse, the number of depressive episodes, and the severity of depressive symptoms the evidence was contradictory. The family history of bipolar disorder, the depressive symptoms and the age at the onset of the mood disorder were found to be associated with the onset of bipolar disorder. The use of antidepressants in bipolar disorder without the simultaneous use of mood stabilizers was noted to possibly lead to a switch from depression to mania or hypomania. Bipolar disorder was also found to share genetic factors with depression and schizophrenia which supports the idea that mood disorders constitute a dimension. In the future, it would be important to increase the accuracy of diagnostics and diagnostic criteria should be re-evaluated. Moreover, the caregivers should be educated about the differences between the depressive episodes in bipolar disorder and unipolar depression and the assessment of family history of bipolar disorder should be established as a basic procedure in the assessment of a mood disorder. Also, one should pay more attention to the occurrence of subthreshold hypomanic symptoms and the use of pharmacotherapy and its effects on the individual during the treatment of a depressive episode. It would also be important to develop a pharmacological treatment that could be used in the treatment of both unipolar depression and bipolar depressive episode.

The aim of the thesis is to observe the elements that address both adult and child readers in the 2010 updated Finnish translation of Tove Jansson’s book The Exploits of Moominpappa. On the background of my research I have a conception of the work as an ambivalent text, which, despite its reputation as a children's book, contains content that addresses both the child and adult readerships. I use a qualitative theory-based content analysis in the study of the text. I apply a reading that the text has two implied readerships, "the children" and "the adults". Utilizing the double address theory I examine how this double audience is addressed in the book. The Finnish translation of the book’s original version was published in 1963. However, Jansson wrote a revision version of The Exploits of Moominpappa in 1968. This later version was only translated into Finnish in 2010. The work has been modified in many ways which harmonizes it’s style with other books of the Moomin novel series. Based on the previous studies on the topic, I consider that the original edition is emphasized on addressing mostly the implied child reader. In the thesis I look at the effect that the added content in the revision version has for the double addressing of the work. I also look at the effect of the metafictional and complex narration layers have on double addressing of the work. The additions made to the revision version of The Exploits of Moominpappa bring new psychological elements to complement the original adventurous plot of the book. Descriptions of the characters' thoughts and feelings have been deepened considerably. The additions on the revision version are focused on addressing the adult audience. The work now permits an interpretation of Moominpappa as a bitter family father who yearns after the lost days of his youth. The narration on the two layers is more complex which enables new interpretations for the adult reader. The child reader may have difficulty to understand the complex narrative that utilizes the mise en abyme structure, includes literature theoretical discourse and parody of the obsolete style of the historical memoirs. These can however be seen addressing the adult reader with higher literary competence. Yet thebook has also retained its characteristics that address the children's audience. The increased addressing of the adult readership makes the revision version more double addressing than the original edition.

Objectives. The theoretical base of the study are the theories of language development that underline the importance of diverse language development in respect of a child’s comprehensive development, especially learning of cognitive skills and socio-emotional development. Behind the study there was an expectation of some kind linguistic delay or a characteristic affecting on communication of the examinees. This expectation was formed due to former studies concerning the language development of twins that show that there’s a possibility of language delay when comparing twins to singletons. The aim of the study was to examine one twin pair and through analysis to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the verbal initiatives a twin child makes to their twin sibling, to their day care group peer children and to adults in the day care environment. Methods. The study was carried out as a qualitative case study. The examinee of the study was one twin pair from Helsinki. In addition, the parents and the kindergarten teacher of the twins participated in the study. Two methods were used to collect the data: observation as a primary data collecting method and half-structured interviews as a secondary data collecting method, so that the twin pair was observed and the parents and the teacher were interviewed. Interviews were used as a complementing data whereas the main focus was on the observation data. The data was collected in the spring of 2015 and the fall of 2015. The analysis was conducted based on both theoretical background of the study and the data collected. The observation data was categorized into interaction episodes and clustered into four different classes that were conceptualized as types of verbal initiatives. Based on these types of verbal initiatives the verbal communication of the twin children was analyzed both according to the initiatives made to the twin sibling, to other children of their daycare group and to adults in the daycare environment. The data from the interviews supported the analysis. Results and conclusions. For the sake of the qualitative and descriptive nature of the study no generalizations were pursued to be made. It turned out that the twins examined in the study used lot of different verbal initiatives and were diverse and skillful users of language. No delays in language development nor any troubles in the use of language were detected in the case of these twin children. The other one of the twins was more shy and reserved as a user of language than their sibling and this reflected on the results of the observation data. However, the secondary data showed that instead of actual linguistic skills the factors causing this kind of result are the characteristics of the child’s personality and temperament. In addition to that, it transpired that during the observation period the twins contacted each other verbally only a little or not at all. Furthermore, the results of the study evoked an interesting additional question of the possible contextuality of the manifestation of verbal skills.

The aim of this qualitative study is to describe and analyze the craft process by the fish skin tanner Liisa Saarnis, in particular how the material affects the product design and ideas. The aim is to identify the challenges and opportunities that the designer have to face in the material designing process. Background information on the material and its uses was collected true online articles and news. The research data was gathered interviewing Liisa Saarni, using semi-structured interview method. The products and material samples that was shown by the Saarni was also supporting the data. The research data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Liisa Saarnis craft process and product design were complex, overlapping and pro-processes took place at simultaneously. Saarnis process was confined to the skin of the fish, and its created opportunities. The material is a starting point for the design, so its share of the product design is significant. The material is setting some challenges for the designer because the processing is very time-consuming and expensive. The material is also very varied, as each fish is an individual. Fish skin tanning demands special expertise so it will never fully replace other commonly used leathers such as calf leather, but it may establish the position in high-end speciality products. Adding fish leather awareness, improving the marketing and influencing attitudes are the factors when analyzeing the future of the fish skin.

Tutkimukseen osallistui kuusi kamppailulajien valmentajaa. Analyysimenetelmänä toimi abduktiivinen eli teoriajohtoinen sisällönanalyysi. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittivat, että valmentajat näkivät kamppailulajien merkityksen laajana 3–6-vuotiaalle lapselle. Kamppailulajien monipuolisuus lapsen kehityksen eri osa-alueiden tukemisena nähtiin erittäin tärkeänä. Myös leikki nähtiin tärkeänä osana lasten kamppailulajiharjoittelua, jonka avulla pystyttiin huomaamatta, hauskasti ja mielekkäästi harjoitella erilaisia kamppailulajeihin liittyä harjoituksia ja tekniikoita.

Tavoitteet: Tässä kandidaatin tutkielmassa on tarkoitus selvitää, kuinka tunnetaitojen kehittymistä voidaan tieteellisen kirjallisuuden mukaan tukea varhaiskasvatusikäisillä lapsilla. Teoriapohjana toimii Mayerin ja Saloveyn (1995) neliosainen tunneälyteoria. Menetelmät: Tämä tutkimus toteutettiin kuvailevana kirjallisuuskatsauksena. Aineisto kerättiin GoogleScholarista ja Taylor & Francis- hakukoneesta tunneälyyn liittyvillä hakusanoilla. Aineistoa analysoitiin luokittelemalla katsaukseen osallistuvat tutkimukset niiden keskeisimpien tutkimustulosten perusteella. Tulokset ja johtopäätökset: Kirjallisuuskatsauksen valossa tunnetaitoja voidaan kehittää arjen tilanteissa (N=1), aikuisten tunnetaitoja tukevalla kasvatustyylillä (N=3), lastenkirjallisuutta hyödyntäen (N=2), tunnetaitojen harjoittelun tukiohjelmilla (N=2) sekä yksittäisiä tunnetaitojen osa-alueita tukemalla (N=2). Tuloksia kannattaa hyödyntää valmistellessa pedagogista toimintaa, jonka tavoite on harjoittaa lasten tunnetaitoja.

Tämän systemaattisen kirjallisuuskatsauksen tavoitteena on muodostaa käsitys siitä, millaista kansalaisuutta yhteiskuntamme tällä hetkellä arvottaa. Globalisaatio ja Euroopan unionin pyr-kimys yhtenäistää jäsenmaidensa kansallista identiteettiä luovat mielenkiintoisen asetelman kan-salaisuuskeskustelulle. Kansallisvaltio -ajattelua, jossa valtio koostuu yhden kansan jäsenistä, kuten Suomi suomalaisista on yhä enenemissä määrin muuttunut monikansalaisuuden, maa-hanmuuton ja globalisaation myötä.

The framework of the study was the support of the agency of immigrants as a part of the acculturation and integration process. The theories on agency in the background of the study have handled agency as a possibility to influence the course of events and as a part of the exercise of power, as an individual resource and as a way the individual continuously moulds the surrounding structures within their limitations and without being their passive victim. In previous research the visibility and exercise of agency was conceived as planned and meaningful work, self-conscious will to learn the language and the development of the individual with the support of the group. The function of the study is to examine what kind of meaning the adult education centre’s work can give to the agency of the immigrant and how agency can be seen to be supported in the work they do. The material of the study was three pieces of interviews of the experts in education of the immigrants at the adult education centres. The interviews were collected as thematic interviews while the research strategy was qualitative. Content-based content analysis was the research framework and the material was analysed through content analysis. The results of the study were the meaning of motivation in independent studies as part of exercising agency, developing of knowledge, skills and comprehension as part of expanding the limits of agency. The learning of the adult education centre’s students was best supported by student-based teaching methods, diverse course offering and the guidance and tranquil atmosphere provided by teachers. Learning can be seen to support the strengthening of agency with the immigrant students. The received results could be used in planning and evaluating the integration training of immigrants.

The goal of this thesis is to study the definitions of educational equality expressed by the National Coalition Party of Finland. The purpose is also to create a timeline concerning the birth of the Finnish comprehensive school and focus on the party’s views about it. The Finnish comprehensive school was based on educational equality, where every student had equal opportunities regardless of their socioeconomic background. The research method was a qualitative theory-based content analysis. The material was collected educational science literature, political platform database Pohtiva and the party’s official web pages. The literature provided a historical overview about comprehensive school and equality concepts. The analysis itself was conducted by studying expressions from the platforms. The expressions were summarized, grouped and modified into equality definitions, which were based on previous theories about equality concepts. The conservative equality concept was a dominant concept in the party’s platforms throughout every decade studied. Neoliberal concept of equality was the second most dominant concept. Sometimes the concept of equal opportunities appeared in the platforms, but in small amounts. The party’s stance towards comprehensive school was doubtful. Individuals were seen as different from each other and they feared the school’s homogenous effect on those individuals. However the party had little power when the school system was being built in the 1960s and 1970s because of their oppositional position in the parliament. In the 1980s the faith toward the welfare state started to crumble and at the same time the National Coalition Party rose to government. This meant big changes in comprehensive school and individual’s choices.

In the recent years, the focus of studying folk costumes have mainly been practicality and selection criteria. The aim of this study is to look further into how they are viewed today, and what thoughts are associated with them. In the recent years, folk costumes have not been studied from this point of view in the context of modern era. This study has been structured into three research questions: What are the meanings associated to folk costumes today? What kinds of hopes and goals is towards folk costumes? How the position of folk costumes is experienced in 2017? The objective of this study is to better understand the approaches and thoughts that are associated with folk costumes today. Answers to the former questions of study were sought by interviewing four people in the midst of the folk costume industry and building on an understanding of their experiences with folk costumes. Two of the subjects are artisans in the folk costume industry, one is a handicrafts teacher, and one an active wearer of folk costumes. The interviews were constructed as theme interviews, and the material was analyzed using narrative analysis, focusing on each subject’s experiences. The main components that rose in the interviews were both tradition and maintenance of heritage and ancestresses; aesthetic and ecological values; the relevance of the studied costume as a whole; the significance of knowledge related to the attitudes towards the costumes; and the subjects’ enthusiasm to folk costumes and sharing their knowledge and appreciation. The analysis uncovered that the subjects’ experiences were quite similar to one another. Some possible reasons for this might be a “bubble” of folk costume enthusiasts, and the tight community that has been formed around the topic. Both aspects came up in the interviews several times. The study uncovered folk costume enthusiasts’ values, thoughts and knowledge, that the mainstream might not be aware of. These sources may be useful in the objective of this study in furthering the appreciation and bettering the position of folk costumes.

The tradition of national costumes of Finland was born along with other efforts of national romanticism during the second half of the 19th century. National dresses were used to emphasize and elevate nationality and the love of one's home regions. The national costume is a very strong symbol of national identity as a performance and as a ceremonious costume. The Finns have developed a tradition of mores and culture of the use of national dresses. As of all national traditions, it involves also excluding attitudes. These attitudes are being destabilized by the national dress aficionados of the 21th century. My interests lay in these ways of destabilizing the traditions of the national costume and the so-called misuse of the national dress. I aim to deconstruct the meanings given to national costumes by their wearers. In this study I will explore how the national dress is misused: how to apply and adapt the tradition, and how to rework items from the costume to other forms of clothing as bricolage, and how this activity is interpreted in the Kansallispuku (national costume) group in Facebook. The subject of this research is a social media community: the interactions in the Kansallispuku group. I approach the subject with the method of ethnography of the virtual communities, i.e. netnography. The frame of reference in this study is in the tradition of the study of dress and clothing with semiotic approach. Although the misuse and the adaptations of the national costume tradition can be seen as a derogating element, it appears in this study that these actions can even fortify the values of the tradition. National dress is now seen in the everyday use also. In this phenomena can also be seen some aspects of sustainability and fashionability. The misuse of the national costume appears as a takeover of one's traditions, and it is encouraged in the community of aficionados this study is focusing on.

Viime vuosien yhteiskunnallisessa keskustelussa on käsitelty kasvavassa määrin varhaiskasvatusta, erityisesti alaa pitkään vaivannutta opettajapulaa. Pula on johtanut siihen, ettei päiväkodeissa työskentele riittävästi päteviä varhaiskasvatuksen opettajia. (Perho & Korhonen, 2012.) Moni varhaiskasvatuksen opettajista kokeekin erinäisistä syistä johtuen työhön liittyvää kuormitusta (mm. Paananen & Tammi, 2017). Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, mitkä eri tekijät ovat saattaneet vaikuttaa opettajapulan syntyyn. Asiaa tarkasteltiin historian, alalle hakeutuvien personnallisuuden piirteiden, arjen kuormittavuuden sekä motivaation kautta. Tutkimuskysymyksiä oli kaksi: 1. Mitkä tekijät ovat vaikuttaneet opettajapulan syntymiseen? 2. Miksi osa varhaiskasvatuksen opettajista vaihtaa alaa? Toteutin tutkielman kvantitatiivisin tutkimusmenetelmin. Loin Google Formsin avulla kyselylomakkeen, jota jaoin eteenpäin verkostoissani.

Goals This study examines how and why people writing blogs find that the most recent Finnish nutritional recommendations are harmful. Blogs create an opportunity for anyone to write their own opinions and to react quickly to current topics. It also seems that bloggers can easily obtain the status of an expert, and this way enables them to spread their own opinions and attitudes, without any scientific research supporting their claims studies or arguments. Methods The research is qualitative and uses theory-driven content analysis. The material collecting was based on a predetermined timeline. Whit this timeline as a guide, 10 blogs with 11 different posts were choosen. Five of The writers were women and six were men. By analyzing the blog posts this study tries to find out reasons why the writers feel the nutritional recommendations are bad or even health threatening. The material was processed through analysing and thematizing the contents. The study focuses solely on opinions written in a negative tone. Results and conclusions The reasons for bloggers to criticize the nutritional recommendations range very widely. However, it became strongly evident that the writers forget the basic rules of scientific argumentation and focus mainly on limited set of research results. They also present impossible demands for the authors of the nutritional recommendations and accused scientists and the National Nutrition Council conspiracy. The above mentioned things are typical for denialism. Home economics teachers should have a good understanding of false specialist associated with food and nutrition. It is important for teachers and researchers of home economics science to identify different strategies of denialism. Identifying strategies that are used to spread false information can help fight against them and to raise awareness of genuine scientific knowledge.

The aim of this literature review was to find out, what kind of textile handicrafts were collected from East Carelian area during Continuation War in 1941–1944 and who were the people who collected them and why did they collect them. Many studies have notions of this subject, but actual research about handicraft related actions in this area hasn’t been done. The research was carried out as a systematic literature review and the material was analyzed using a qualitative method. The analyzed publications were found by searching from databases and investigating the reference lists of these publications. Two historical researces, one Master’s thesis and literature from couple persons that worked in the area at the time were selected as the material of this research. Finns collected textile handicrafts from the occupied area to preserve them from weather conditions, to examine them and to teach the techniques forward. The goal was to attach the East Carelian area to Finland and collected handicrafts were a part of this academic work. The textile handicrafts that were collected represented all kinds of products, for example woven cloths, clothes, towels, laces and wall hangings. Especially scientist Helmi Helminen and Tyyni Vahter as well as handcraft teachers Tyyne-Kerttu Virkki and Maija Stenij were the ones to collect the handicrafts from the area.

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, millaisia visuaalisia representaatioita isähahmoista esiintyy 2000-luvun kotimaisten lastenkirjojen kansikuvissa.

Traditional Finnish hand knitted woolen socks are usually very similar in construction: they all have the same reinforced flap heel. Today, when sharing of knitting instructions and ideas with other enthusiasts is easier than ever, thanks to social media, there are countless alternatives for knitting the heel. Using a reinforced knit doesn’t seem to be so important anymore. In this study four different knit structures usually found in woolen socks heel are compared on abrasion and pilling resistance. Also, the effect of the fiber content and price of the yarn in abrasion and pilling resistance is compared. Three reinforced knits were compared to plain stockinette knit; traditional reinforced knit, Eye of Partridge knit and two-colored pinstripe knit. Three different wool blend yarns were compared to 100 % wool. Two of the wool blends were similar in fiber content (75 % wool, 25 % polyamide), but very different in price. Two similar samples were knitted in all four knit structures with all four yarns. Samples were rubbed with martindale-device until a hole occurred. Weight loss and pilling of the samples were measured every 20 rubs. Reinforced knits were compared to stockinette knit and wool blends to 100 % wool. The two polyamide-wool blends were compared to each other to investigate if the price of the yarn effected on its quality. The study showed that the reinforced knits weight loss percentage was smaller than stockinette knits, but that they were less resistant to pilling. Hole occurred first in the Eye of the Partridge knit and last in the traditional reinforced knit. Polyamide-wool blends were considerably more resistant to weight loss and breaking than 100 % wool but less resistant to pilling. Nettle-wool blend was more resistant to weight loss than 100 % wool, but less resistant to breaking and pilling. Of the two polyamide-wool blends the more expensive yarn lasted 15 % longer before breaking than the cheaper yarn. It also was more resistant to weight loss and pilling, As a conclusion, the fiber content is more important to abrasion and pilling resistance than the knit structure. To achieve a long life-cycle for machine washable polyamide-wool blend socks it is more important to consider other factors than the knit structure of the heel. Those factors could be for example appearance and fit, or any other factor that makes the product more significant to its user.
