This study is a theoretical overview about the parental partnership between a teacher and a parent, as well as about the co-operation between home and school which enables the parental partnership. The aim of the study is to give an idea about the key concepts of the subject, based on literature on the field of behavioural studies. At first I have defined the basic abstracts upbringing and teaching. Both are used in colloquial and therefore also challenging to define. They must, however, be defined to enable later contemplation of responsibility of education and parental partnership. The responsibility of education is divided between home and school. How the division is made in practise depends on the child, family, teacher and the rest of the school community. I have clarified what the educational responsibilities of the parents and the teachers include, as defined by the Finnish law and in the curriculum (2014). In spite of the law and different kinds of requests there is plenty of ongoing debate about who is raising our children now that the process of allocating time is changing and different agents have a stronger impact on the upbringing. Parental partnership is an abstract that has generalised in the field of early childhood education and is slowly stabilizing also in school. The co-operation between home and school must be based on mutual respect, confidentiality and common values. Without them, upbringing cannot be a shared responsibility between the parents and the teachers. It is my intention to use the results of this literature review in my Master’s Degrees in which I will research how different kinds of educational tasks are divided between home and school. My special interest is to explain how parents and teachers understand the abstract of parental partnership and how they find that it materialises in their everyday life.
