The aim of the study was to define and descripe the concept of outdoor education. Target was to find answers to the following questions: How is outdoor education defined in research literature? What are the dimensions of values in the research literature in the definitions of outdoor education? The theoretical framework of the study consists of the theories of outdoor- and nature education, environmental education and education for a sustainable lifestyle. Shalom Schwartz's theory model of values is one of the central theories behind the study. The method of the study was a systematic literature review. The material of the review was selected with care out of literature dealing with education and teaching in nature as well as documents that guide teaching and education. The study showed that outdoor education is a multidimensional and context related concept. Definitions and descriptions in the research literature were parallel to each other, but the use of concepts was variable. Outdoor education is defined in research literature as a form of environmental education that involves experience and thrill. Outdoor education is mainly carried out in nature and at the same time includes education of values that supports environmental responsibility. Based on the findings, it can be stated that the values of the individual and the community guide the direction of outdoor education.
