    Aims. The purpose of the research was to study school catering as a pedagogical situation controlled by a teacher. The national curriculum, as well as previous school meal research and literature, support school catering as a pedagogical situation controlled by a teacher. The study included four key theorems, which defined the educational background and the underlying factors of the Finnish school catering. Researching the school catering situation on the basis of its educational aims is timely because the new curriculum came into force in the elementary schools in autumn 2016. Methods. My thesis was a literature review, in which the theoretical framework was based on the earlier school meal research and other essential literature related to the school catering. Conclusions. The school meal situation has become a teacher's educational task over the decades. Educational guidance for school catering is based on law and curriculum. The nature of the pedagogical situation is influenced by the dining room as a physical and social learning environment.
