Aims. The aim of my bachelor thesis was to compile a systematic literature review on the relationship between knowledge management and motivation, and thus to suggest a concept of motivating knowledge management. The challenges of today´s working life are continually one of the biggest challenges facing the organization which knowledge management tries to answer. Knowledge management is management that aims to provide the employees with the necessary knowledge, skills and competence. Knowledge and motivation go hand in hand and motivation and leadership are also linked. My thesis examines motivation through the self-determination theory of Ryan and Deci, which emphasizes individual´s internal and external motivation. Management is brought up through leadership and coaching perspectives, where the connection of motivation and management is highlighted. In my thesis, I look at the relationship between knowledge management and motivation and how these two concepts are intertwined. My research questions are 1) how does the motivation of the employee emerge in the knowledge management, 2) how do managers/supervisors get their employees motivated and 3) what are the challenges in motivating knowledge management? Methods. The study was conducted as a systematic literature review which I collected from the Helka database and based on previous studies. The material was gathered based on both scientific articles and literature. The analysis was carried out as a content analysis where I made notes to the material and strikethroughs. Results and conclusions. The results highlight the link between knowledge management and motivation through a more detailed review. The close relationship between leadership and motivation made motivation more visible also in knowledge management and in the ways of motivating employees the verifying of competence was emphasized. Employee motivation is influenced by the management style, the freedom of employees, and the use of internal and external motivation. Challenges were found in the consideration of external motivation, reward system and management style. There was no prior literature of motivating knowledge management, so the results also highlighted the reasoning behind the new concept.
