The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to see what kind of ways of preventing behavioral disorders teachers in the early childhood education have in the light of current literature. This study deals with two intervention programs, The Incredible Years and Kids’ Skills that are in use in Finland. First I’m defining the concept of behavioral disorder and the various ways it can appear. This literature review introduces also the documents, which guides the ways of how early childhood education and preschools give support in kindergarten. This study combines the features of descriptive and systematic literature reviews. Literature was widely available and as in descriptive literature review strict rules didn’t define the choosing of the literature. In the making of this study more liberty was used compared to systematic literature review. When discussing about children’s behavioral disorders stigmatizing concepts are used many times. In this study I’m suggesting that more descriptive concepts are needed in order to understand and prevent the problems in children’s behavior. The concepts of behavioral disorders are used at least in the field of education, special education, development psychology, psychiatry and paediatrics. The interdisciplinary nature of behavioral disorders makes the defining and using of it more complicated. The intervention models, which were discussed in this study, proved that the solution to children’s behavior can be found in the change of the environment or behavior of adults. Positive, anticipatory group controlling strategies and disciplinary methods were seen as successful and effective methods. Cooperation with children’s parents was seen as important point also. The documents, which guide early childhood education and preschools share the same principles about giving support too.
