This bachelor's thesis is a literature review on school bullying and how to respond to it. The goal of the study is to present a comprehensive overview of bullying and to show different measures how teachers can respond to it. What does one mean by bullying? There are different definitions, but the definition by Olweus is commonly accepted in the literature. According to it bullying is repetitive negative actions involving an imbalance of power between the victim and one or more bullies. Bullying can be divided into direct and indirect bullying. Direct bullying involves openly aggressive behaviour towards the victim, while indirect bullying involves social isolation. Bullying can also be classified into physical, verbal, and relational bullying. Another topic is detecting and preventing bullying. Bullying is usually a hidden phenomenon, which is why teachers are often unable to recognize it. The amount of bullies involved can also be easily miscalculated by teachers, because they can only see a part of the process. When a teacher detects bullying, it's important to respond to it as soon as possible. A quick response shows that bullying isn't accepted and prevents systematic bullying. In this study, prevention measures are divided into school-wide, class-wide and individual measures. The upcoming master's thesis is going to focus on what kind of bullying teachers have detected and how did the detection happen. The focus will be especially on what kind of measures teachers have used to prevent bullying and how have these measures worked.
