The purpose of this study was to find out if students' goal orientations differ from each other, considering the mother's educational background. In addition it is explored if students with different goal orientations apply to different upper secondary education. The aim was to find out whether the student's goal orientation or the mother's educational background has an effect on how he/she applies to upper secondary education. The theory of this study is based on five goal orientations developed by Niemivirta: learning, achievement, performance-approach, performance-avoidance and avoidance. Goal orientations have been widely studied, but previous studies do not tell whether the mother's educational background has effect on them. Nor has the relationship between the goal orientations and applying to upper secondary education been previously studied. Instead, previous studies have shown that parents' educational background has an effect on the child's level of education and education level is inherited. The study is quantitative and the material used was the data collected by the Centre for Educational Assessment of the University of Helsinki in 2016 using questionnaires. Total amount of respondents was 3621 persons. Answers to the research questions were searched using one-way analysis of variance and logistic regression. The relationship between parental education level and educational placement is also confirmed by this study. In summary, the results of this research were that students who apply to upper secondary school have high learning and achievement orientations and their mothers have higher educational level. On the other hand it seems that avoidance orientated students apply to vocational education and their mothers have less higher education. Some of these avoidance orientated students seem to choose between high school and vocational school. A problematic group seemed to be the students who didn’t apply anywhere. Many of them seemed to be avoidance orientated but it was difficult to draw any other conclusions concerning them. In the study it was found out that it is difficult to name the predictive factors of the level of education and it seems to be influenced by many different factors.
