The intention of my literature review is to diversify the understanding of the influence of temperament in the school world especially among the students studying to become teachers. In the review I study what temperament consists of and how it affects in the school world. I look at temperament from a general viewpoint as my intention was not to focus on a spesific temperament theory. The basic understanding of temperament tells what in a person's (especially a child's) behaviour can or cannot be explained by temperament and also defines the different aspects that affect a person's temperament. I view the affect of students' different temperaments on a teacher's work through the temperament traits that come up in the book Temperament and school performance (Temperamentti ja koulumenestys) (2006) by Liisa Keltinkangas-Järvinen. The affect of a teacher's own temperament in their work as well as the compatibility of temperament and the surroundings also beacame subjects of review. My aim is to provide the reader, in addition to the basic understanding of temperament, with concrete examples of how to work with children/students with different temperaments. The material of my literature review consists largely of the books Temperament - human individuality (Temperamentti - ihmisen yksilöllisyys) (2004) and Temperament and school performance (Temperamentti ja koulumenestys) (2006) by Liisa Keltinkangas-Järvinen, the latter being a pioneer in Finnish temperament research. To support these sources I utilisized the work of a few well-known foreign temperament researchers. The understanding of temperament helps teachers in understanding diversity, interacting with students and planning their own teaching. Then the teacher has a better ability to create a classroom environment that is most compatible with the students' temperaments. The concept we talk about is goodness of fit. When the teacher recognises the students' temperaments, they can use that information to create a functioning seating order, form functioning work groups and plan their own teaching. Students' temperaments should be considered indvidually to avoid inequality. In the evaluation of students, however, temperament should not be considered. For these reasons understanding of temperament is extremely important for teachers.
