Creating music in school, meaning for example improvisation and composing, is one of the central goals of music education in the curriculum through elementary school in Finland. The use of technology is increasingly emphasized in teaching and in music education. It is clearly related to the goals of music creating but studies have shown that these work methods are used remarkably rarely in music education in schools. The purpose of this study was to find out what the use of music technology as a tool for creating music in practice means. The subject is quite new and it has not been studied much. The main source of this literature review consists of studies and articles published in international peer-reviewed journals and professional literature. Music technology appeared in music creating work methods as a versatile set of music applications on mobile devices. Based on this research, music applications brought versatile alternatives to the expression of musical ideas. Because of music applications accessibility they enabled music creation regardless of the musical skill level. Music applications also formed a motivating mobile and multimodal learning environment for pupils. In addition, music technology was found to provide help for teachers to organize music lessons and enable students to work in groups. Music technology seems to be a good tool for creating music in school when its use can be justified pedagogically.
