Subject of this bachelor ́s thesis is the different stages of Finnish primary school reformation and the opposition towards it. The goal of this thesis is to clarify those things that lead to the primary school reformation and where the harsh opposition came from. The goal is also to clarify those operators that were in the lead of the opposition. Earlier studies have shown that the reformation was interpreted to increase governments control over the people. It was also seen to penetrate too much into people’s private lives. The primary school reform has been shown to be a part of a bigger national change that intended to create a system, which would be more societally fair. Studies say that behind the change was a leftist worldview which worried the right greatly. In this change the school reform had a big part and that is also why it was opposed so fiercely. The thesis uses a source criticism as its method. The studies and books that have already been published work as a material. The periods political and social climate has been taken in consideration when making conclusion about subject. The primary school reform has been a success. The reform was born out of the necessity of to answer the needs of changing society. Visions of many school policy maker played a vital role. The change was partly made by because of these visions of more just system. This new system guaranteed an education for everyone. The societal pressure came because there was ongoing change in society because people were moving from the countryside to the cities to work. This caused the demand for more education. The primary school reform was integral part of the lefts aim to create more societally just system. Right wing saw this as a dangerous path that lead towards socialism. It tried to influence very hard into ongoing change in system and it tried to hold on to the older version of the system. At the centre of their idea was a government that had as small as possible say towards people’s private lives. For this the right founded several different unions and foundations. At the end of these efforts of resistance had an only limited impact because the reformation of primary school was done successfully.
