This bachelor's thesis is a descriptive literature review on what makes a good educational video, what kind of studies has been done on educational videos and what are the core elements of a good educational video. The goal of the review was to find concrete advice on how to make better educational videos for the creators of educational videos. In this research the focus was on the structure and technical aspects of a good educational video, not on the different ways to use educational video for teaching and learning. The research method used was narrative literary review. The material for research consists of 30 studies from the fields of pedagogy and information technology. The scope of the studies included memory and learning theories related to educational videos, how effective video is as a teaching tool, the quality of an educational video and different educational videos in YouTube. The themes rising from the literary can be divided to five main categories. These are: defining what is an educational video, learning and memory theories related to educational video, copyrights, effectiveness of educational videos and the questions about the technical quality, length, structure, signals, sound and image, pace and style of narration, subtitles, background music, interactivity and personalization of an educational video. This review includes a 24-point checklist based on the ten elements of a good educational video. This review also confirms that effectiveness of an educational video depends on how well it is planned and tested before it is released. Most of the studies stated that students appreciated high quality educational videos and using them increased the motivation of the students. The studies were only partly unanimous that the use of educational videos would improve learning results. The majority of the source material for this literary review was from the US. They didn't cover copyright matters because in the USA so called "fair use" doctrine permits using different video materials freely in education. In Finland the limited and multi-interpretable copyright rules have made it more difficult to use videos in teaching. The new EU Copyright Directive was approved on April 15th, 2019. The goal of the Directive is to update the copyrights for digital environments and Finland will pass the appropriate legislation to meet the Directive's requirements by 2021.
